Home > Rugby > Sacking Graham Henry is NOT the answer for the All Blacks

Is it my imagination or are we New Zealanders a nation of people that don't like to lose, don't know how to lose or are lost in the belief that the All Blacks, who are but mortal beings as ourselves, are in fact unstoppable?
Yes, the referee erred, he missed a forward pass that cost us seven points and the NZRFU more than likely, millions of dollars in lost revenue. But the game goes on.
And when we get down to the nitty-gritty of it all, Graham Henry has coached the men in black well, well enough to be triumphant in 42 of the last 48 international matches played. That in itself is testimony to this man's ability to train a rugby team to an unpresidented level of competitiveness.
The question must be asked by the NZRFU: "What is to be gained by replacing Henry?'' The answer is nothing. He has committed as much, if not more to this World Cup campaign than we as a nation are giving him credit for.
We need to harden up and realise that we are never going to win them all. Yes, we have Daniel Carter, Luke McAlister, Richie McCaw and oodles of other raw talent, but at the end of the day it is a game.
We call it 'sport', so let's stop looking to string someone up and rather use our energies to get in behind the All Blacks to ensure that we, too, will forget the weekend past and once again bask in the warmth of winning glory in 2011.
God Bless New Zealand.

Why blame the coach its a kiwi thing to do he didnt play the game i bet his wished his players had half a brain i believe he is a very good coach and his record speaks for itself.

I agree, sacking Graham Hendry is not going to solve the problem. Why? Because the problem is not the coach or the players but the referees. I am waiting for the day that a captain on the field will take his players to their in goal area and then refuse to continue with the game until the referee reverse his incorrect decision. This will be a very strong way in showing your disapproval with the referee. I am referring to two incidents. A couple of years ago Paul Honis instructed the two captains to go and talk to their players and then allowed France to take a quick penalty which resulted in a try scored against the Boks. (France was the other team and they have won that game). Honis later apologised to the Boks for his mistake. John Smit should have refused to play because he was instructed by the Honis to talk to his players. The forward pass that led to the try scored by France against AB is the second incident. I just want one team to delay a game for about five minutes. Imagine the foc

Ex All Blacks and even current All Blacks were commenting that there was not enough time for players to get combinations established - Robbie Deans says the same thing - unfortunately Graham Henry did not listen and we fielded a team that had some key positions filled by players who were not in top form (especially Sitivatu for Howlett) and who being played were out of position (centre)- if they could have used the ball in a better way through the backs the game would have been ours. For some reason they appeared to lack confidence - probably feared failure. The game needed to start much faster to provide the confidence the AB's needed - the decision to return kick in the first half hour instead of starting a running attack game - possibly upset the whole All Black game. The AB's are soley responsible for loosing this - they are a far better side than the French - and have shown many many times what they can do with a running ball - a very sad day!

well said troy - 20 times ;) graham henry is the most complete coach the ABs have had for as long as i can remember. ok so things didn't go right on the day but thats sport. the best thing for a strong team is continuity. don't put the team back another few years. as troy said - lets learn from this and grow as a team
This is not the Graham Henry Fan Club is it? Graham Henry was appointed to do the stated job of win this RWC - He has failed badly. As a fan I appreciate what he has done with the All Blacks and their winning record and I feel gratitude to him BUT he must go now. (my opinion) He should not coach the All Blacks any longer. We have other very skilled people to do that job

Mr Henry has probably had the biggest learning experience of his life and is too valuable to let go. He is a nice man, perhaps he has learned he is too nice, and could even be a better coach if he had a bit more ruthlessness about him. Timing of injuries was a great factor, and it appears that something can be learned about so many hamstring injuries. The odds were stacked against the All Blacks in Europe with injuries, balls, draws (was there one),jerseys and officials, yet the grating thing is that they could have still won. Well all my eggs are in one basket now, Go Humble Pumas. That a northern team could win, not only is unimaginable, but unbearable. Both have played their final and no matter how much racist venom Stephan Jones vomits, neither can win a fair game against any of the world's best seven teams; all from the south. The ABs failure was in part due to Henry's blinkers being on when it came to the crunch. For all that rotation policy we still played an injured Dan Carter, played our best fullback at centre and neglected the form wing in Howlett. The draw and the ref werent his fault, but big mistakes were made all the same. Keep him one more season and then bring in Robbie Deans later for the RWC 2001

Unstoppable? Em, don't see your names in the semi final listing. For that matter, you haven't actually won the World Cup in 20 years and that one was in your own backyard. It would appear you are quite 'stoppable' to me
Brilliant! That's not childish at all and giving teams that kind of control thus completely undermining the officials is not a bad idea at all. Grow up, don't be such an arrogant fool. The ref and other officials call the shots, not the players. Boo hoo, the only side to be the victims of some dodgy decisions? Idiot. I would love to see the Blacks try that and get torn apart for it. Will you be taking your ball and going home too? Awwww, poor baby

I think that Tana Umunga should be fired as skipper now he has lost - ! He's now lost the game and after what he did to BOD - we Irish dont forget!
I support Ulster rugby and Seamus Mallon would easily tip that Umnga over! I agree with Shane - Boo Hoo useless Al Blacks!

NOBODY can deny that over the past 4 years, the All Blacks have been the most consistant team in world rugby and rightly earned the position as the World's No.1 Team. No Argument. BUT this does not guarantee World Cup success. Every 4 years when the Kiwis fail to lift the trophy, the coach falls on his sword or is sacked. Unless he's a total dickhead, the coach should stay put. And so it is with Graham Henry. Keep him and win it in your own back yard in 2011. As for players going "on strike" because they don't like a decision - I don't know what you're on Francois but I suggest you check into Rehab ASAP.

Was Umaga's tackle on BOD the reason your team only made up the numbers at the RWC and wasnt that tackle years ago get over it BOD is so overated its not funny being the best player in the Irish team doesnt mean a whole lot.

It is a dark time for New zealand rugby & for all black rugby. The All Blacks went to france for one prupose: to win the Webb Ellis Trophy. In the end they opted out early. Everyone is blaming Graham Henry when he is not the problem in the first place, ok so the rotation policy didnt work in the end but hey give the man a break he's done more work with those boys than any other coach. If there is one problem in this all black management posse it's the board itself - Hobbs & Moller but dont put the blame on henry. He was given a job to do & he saw it through. As a fellow kiwi & rugby fan i know what loss is i've been through it but not as a coach. Let us remind ourselves that he had to pull out 22 players without any game time up their sleeves @ the start of this year for a reason. on my behalf give graham a fair go... GIVE GRAHAM HENRY A SECOND CHANCE?!!!
