Rumours: Liverpool close to massive signing
Everyone at Anfield must be sick of the Mascherano 'will he, won't he' saga – well, apparently £17m says he will do a deal to stay.

It appears that Liverpool are nearing the much anticipated signing of a permanent deal for hugely influential midfielder Javier Mascherano (various).
The £17m-plus needed to buy out his contract from his owners is apparently now definitely going to be stumped up, whoever ends up running the Merseyside club, whether it's the Dubai crowd or Hicks and Gillett.
There is no over-stating the importance of the Argentinian to the club – his tenacious tackling and midfield engine have made him one of the star performers in Rafa Benitez’s stuttering side.
The 23-year-old former Hammer is surely going to sign on the dotted line and show his loyalty to a club he clearly loves.

Mascherano is going to be a Liverpool legend. No doubt about it.

How overated is this guy, he cant make a pass, cant take a shot, cant make a header, and yet he is considered to be great. he is much like sissoko, just not as good as winning the ball

Oh mine...make him ours....he will be his own legend in his own rights man!. This guy is genius..simply just love the way he sneek up and snack the ball back from behind... With him falling back our captain will not be too worry when he move forward to support the attack.

Mark I thank you for being diplomatic in your response as some would have tried to put that point across in a different way. But the truth is alot of headers can be won in midfield especially with the amount of long balls in the English game nowadays. I didnt say anything about him not scoring but the fact that when he comes up abit his decision making is terrible, much like how makelele was. I may not wwatch him week in week out as I am not a liverpool supporter but what i have watched suggest to me that his passing leaves much to be desired aswell. Yes i agree he is a decent player but maybe i prefer more creative players, and as u said all he needs to do is sit infront of the back 4.

Unfortunately Jimmy has admitted to not watching Mascherano regurlarly so although he feels compelled to provide his ill-informed views with us all has only provided further evidence that there really are people out there that really do call themselves "football fans" yet do not understand football. If you had watched Liverpool/Maxcherano more frequently you would have noticed his average performance consists of winning the ball, providing defensive cover and breaking up attacks. As for his disttrubution, it is also his job to give the ball to a more creative player, for what he is asked to do he does it perfectly. His role is as a defensive midfielder, the clue to what he does on the pitch is in the job title "defensive midfielder", fortunately there are analysts out there who provide a true reflection of a players effectiveness through stats and figures on which we can rely rather than one mans blind ststement, Mascherano has re-built his reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders around since arriving from his nightmare at West Ham, this speaks volumes of the players ability, unfortunately for you Jimmy D it only proves your opinion is one shared by a minority, as for your reasons for your opinion, it may be jealousy, stupidity, denail or just a plain lack of understanding of football, please refrain from providing further evidence of this!

Defensively a rock but lets not pretend he has no attacking skills. Regularly picks out support players with accurate passing game & good options.Headers?-I much prefer a midfielder who wins the ball on the ground regularly than someone who can head a ball. Will only improve in time-this shows we are going in the right direction with our signings.

I was going to say he is not in the top 5 midfielders in the premier league, after looking at the actim index which rates the players in the EPL, and for blind people such are yourselves here is t he proof, and thank you magic space monkey for mentioning "ortunately there are analysts out there who provide a true reflection of a players effectiveness through stats and figures on which we can rely rather than one mans blind ststement" but here is the link for the top 100 players in the premier league as of 26/02/08 http://www.pdfdownload.org/pdf2html/pdf2ht ml.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.howden.press.net%2Fa ctim%2FPremOver_index_top100.pdf&images=yes and Macherano is not not even in the top 100 EPL players this year, and you talk about no football knowledge, you should be embarrassed
