Liverpool are attempting a move for Real Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra whose place in Bernd Schuster’s side is under threat due to the emergence of £14m Argentinian star Fernando Gago (Tuttosport).

This has led some to put two and two together to get five. The possible availability of Malian international Diarra, combined with the supposed homesickness of Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso, has led some to suggest that the Spaniard may be included as part of a swap deal.

Whilst this isn’t a bridge too far, I find it an unlikely scenario. Diarra was in fine form last term as he helped Real to the La Liga title and even though he has been out of the side following his involvement in the African Nations Cup, Gago and Diarra have shown they can play together.

‘Alonso still has a lot to offer Liverpool and I am sure Rafa can convince him that his future lies at Anfield.'

I also think that Alonso still has a lot to offer Liverpool and I am sure Rafa can convince him that his future lies at Anfield.
