Sports Illustrated's 'Sportsman of the Year' title used to be a coveted award but thanks to some outrageous decisions in recent years it has become nothing more than a joke. Dwyane Wade joins fellow American athletes such as Tom Brady, Tim Duncan, Lance Armstrong and Tigers Woods as recent winners of the award.

The last non-American to win was speed skater Johann Koss, who shared the award with fellow skater, Bonnie Blair in 1994.

Don't get me wrong, Wade is a great athlete and a fantastic basketballer but Sportsman of the Year? You've got to be kidding me.

The bias towards American athletes isn't justified, especially when you consider what a poor year Americans have had. They put up sub-standard performances in the World Baseball Classic, Men's and Women's World Basketball Championships, Davis Cup and Ryder Cup. Luckily for them the Toronto Blue Jays are their only obstacle from claiming the World Series.

Want an alternative to Wade? How about Tiger Woods? Tiger had as good a year when he won this award in 1996 and again in 2000. Surviving the ordeal of losing his father, Woods won two majors and put together a streak of six consecutive victories

What about Roger Federer who was unlucky not to have won last year and is even more cruelly denied this year. He won three Grand Slams, was runner-up in the other. All in all he won 12 tournaments for the year and finished with an astonishing 92-5 record. It was as close to perfection as the tennis world will ever see. The only thing preventing Federer being prefect was that he isn't American.
