JOHANNESBURG - Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Chelsea duo Didier Drogba and Michael Essien have been named as the three finalists for the African Footballer of the Year award for a second successive year.
The Confederation of African Football, having announced five candidates last month, whittled the list down to three after voting by coaches of the organisation's 53 member countries.
Nigeria's Nwankwo Kanu and the Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika have failed to make the last three, CAF said in a statement.
Cameroon striker Eto'o, expected to return to action this month after a serious knee injury, will be seeking to win the award for an unprecedented fourth time.
Eto'o narrowly beat Drogba of the Ivory Coast to the 2005 award with Ghana's Essien in third place.
The winner of the 2006 award will be announced at a ceremony in Accra, Ghana on March 1.

Football has always been a source of hope to boys from poor neighbourhoods in Africa, its successfull professionals like George Weah, Abedie Pele and Roger Miller have been reference. These days the dreams of poor African kids lies in the spectacular matches of Eto'o, Esien and Drogba. They are the flag bearers of an african continent seeking for survival.

After having a serious injury,he returned to the squad and as the case was,his pressure resulted in a superb Barca vitory 4days ago. In 2006 at the CAN [ANC] in Egypt,he was able to play the first three matches of the first of the CAN 2006,and set a pace.Of course the leading scorer. He returned to Europe, performed so well,in Spain,at the end of the 2006 Spanish La Liga,he was the Pichichi, best attacker, man of the match [UEFA Champions League Finals 2006].For the 2nd year in a row, they led the La Liga and also the Kings Cup Drogba at least did the best he could to take his boys to the Germany 2006,impressive indeed. Two Barclay English Premier League titles for D.D,good indeed. Facing the hard facts,Samuel Eto.O has proven to be very tough and has all reasons to get the conservative record as his 2006 performance can be seen.
