GLASGOW - Third division Greenock Morton provided the shock of the Scottish Cup third round on Saturday with a 3-1 home win over Premier League side Kilmarnock.

The top-flight club took the lead with an early second-half goal from Colin Nish who volleyed past keeper Paul Mathers.

But Morton surged back with a double from Chris Templeman and a late third from on-loan Celtic player Paul McGowan to send Kilmarnock, cup winners in 1997, out the tournament.

Morton manager Jim McInally said that despite the good cup showing, promotion was the club's top target.

"Promotion is our aim, but this is fantastic," he told BBC Radio.

"The one thing these players have got is incredible character and they showed that today."

Another surprise result was non-league Deveronvale winning 5-4 at home to fourth-division basement club Elgin City.

Holders Hearts eased past Stranraer 4-0 with a hat-trick from Lithuanian striker Andrius Velicka and a goal from Czech Republic forward Roman Bednar.

Celtic beat fourth-division Dumbarton 4-0 after two goals inside the opening 10 minutes from Polish striker Maciej Zurawski put them in control.

Goals from Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Derek Riordan sealed the win.

Airdrie United lost 1-0 at home to Motherwell while Stirling Albion crashed 6-1 at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle. St Johnstone drew 0-0 with Ayr United and Ross County lost 1-0 to Partick Thistle.

Last season's cup runners-up Gretna won 3-0 at Clyde while Hamilton Academical lost 4-2 at home to Livingston and Dundee drew 1-1 at home to Queen of the South. Cowdenbeath drew 1-1 with Brechin City and Berwick Rangers lost 2-0 to Falkirk.

Managerless Rangers are at Dunfermline Athletic on Sunday while the other weekend tie between Dundee United and St Mirren was postponed. United have been struck by a flu bug and switched their Sunday clash to January 16.

Aberdeen and Hibernian play on January 10.
