Former Scotland international Graeme Souness confirmed on Tuesday he had made a £20million offer to buy Championship club  Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Daily Mirror reported that negotiations between Souness and club owner Jack Hayward had taken place in recent weeks but Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey denied the move.

"I have offered to buy Wolves for £20million," said Souness in a statement read out on Sky Sports News. "I don't know why Jez Moxey is saying these things, I've had several conversations with Jack Hayward and Jez Moxey. Last week I made an offer. Jez Moxey said 'no'  to it but the offer still stands and we'll have to see what happens."

Earlier on Tuesday, Moxey did not rule out a bid for the club but said Wolves were not talking to Souness.
"It is not true we are in negotiations with Graeme Souness or anyone connected to him," he said. "We are in a situation where we are interested in new investment in the club and a possible change of owner, so anybody who meets the criteria we will talk to."

Souness enjoyed a glittering playing career with Liverpool, Sampdoria and Rangers and has also managed at the highest level, most notably with Liverpool, Rangers, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.

Wolves, relegated to the Championship in 2004 after one season in the top flight, are ninth in the table, one point off the play-off positions.

Businessman Hayward, life president of Wolves, bought the club he supported as a boy in 1990, pumping in millions of pounds to try to restore the Molineux outfit back among the game's elite.
