MUNICH (Reuters) - Ireland's Padraig Harrington rubber-stamped his place in Europe's Ryder Cup team on Friday after a two-under-par 70 in the BMW International second round.
His compatriot Paul McGinley, however, will have to sweat it out over his place at the K Club after missing the cut at Nord Eichenried.
An enigmatic 72 by McGinley left the player who holed the winning putt in 2002 with an anxious wait to see whether he will be overtaken in Europe's table by Sunday night.
The portents for McGinley are favourable so far, though. His closest rival for the 10th and final qualifying spot, Briton Paul Broadhurst, sits just on the predicted cut-off mark of 143, one-under, and the Englishman needs a top three position to oust McGinley.
"It will be extraordinary if I don't make it," McGinley said. "Padraig has said that when qualifying is over I'll be all right. I hope he's right.
"I'm not a million miles away, it's not disastrous, but I am struggling at times.
"I shouldn't have got into this position, though. I've had a very, very poor year. I'm a better player than that."
TORRID FINALES
McGinley has twice before had torrid finales to Ryder Cup campaigns before coming through but looked as though he would be a certainty after winning last year's Volvo Masters.
His round in Munich was a case of "over-trying", according to playing-partner Harrington. "He's talking to balls in flight and definitely taking it a bit too much at heart," his regular matchplay partner added.
"I think he'll make it. But a change of attitude will be better for him than any change of golf swing."
Former European number one Lee Westwood's fortunes did not improve but the Englishman strengthened his wild-card case further with a 71 that left him only three strokes behind early leaders Alejandro Canizares, son of former Ryder Cup stalwart Jose-Maria, and Swede Mattias Eliasson.
Already suffering from tonsillitis and feeling the effects of antibiotic tablets, Westwood was dismayed to see his ball loop into a hazard at his first hole after his driver head broke, causing him a double-bogey.
His battle back from that setback would surely have impressed Europe's Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam further, but Westwood revealed that the Welshman had made no contact with him other than urging him to play earlier this week.
With his tonsillitis easing, Westwood now plans to make the ultimate impression: "If I'm anything like feeling good at the weekend I'm going all out to win now."
