This weekend marks the beginning of the longest V8 SuperCar series in Australia with the 2007 series comprising 14 rounds, with 37 races over the next ten months.

Adelaide always puts on a great weekend of racing and this year will be no different in the two-race format each over a distance of 250km. The first race is on Saturday and the second on Sunday.

Qualifying this year is all new, with a knockout format used to get drivers into the 'Top 10'. The first session sees the bottom 11 dropped and in the next session the remaining 20 drivers fight it out for the remaining ten places. The season also heralds a new scoring system with points given only to the top 15 places and the difference between each position is greater. This is intended to spur drivers to seek a higher finishing position.

Qualifying got under way after the practice sessions on Thursday and Friday morning. This year's first qualifying saw some of the big names left out and some young guns show their hands early. Notable drivers missing from the final 'Top 10' were:

  • Greg Murphy (Tasman Motorsport) 11th
  • Last year's championship winner Rick Kelly (Toll HSV) 15th
  • Steven Richards (Ford Performance Racing) 16th
  • Mark Skaife (Holden Racing Team) 17th

They will all be bitterly disappointed with their results and as under the new rules they cannot drop their worst round, they cannot afford to slip up during the race and a good finish will be absolutely vital everywhere.

After an exciting qualifying session, the 'Top 10' looked like this:

1. James Courtney (Jen-Weld MotorSport), 2. Jamie Whincup (Team Vodafone), 3. Garth Tander (Toll HSV), 4. Mark Winterbottom (Ford Perfomance Racing), 5. Jason Richards (Tasman Motorsport), 6. Craig Lowndes (Team Vodafone), 7. Todd Kelly (Holden Racing Team),8. Russell Ingall (Caltex Racing), 9.Steven Johnson (Jim Beam Racing), 10. Lee Holdsworthy (Valvoline Cummins Race Team).

Stay tuned for more updates after each race.
