Hi Robin, informative article as always. Is the addiction to steroids a physiological one as per heroin or tobacco or is it psychiatric disorder like anorexia that was alluded to in the article? I guess it doesn't make much difference to the end result, but it can make a difference to how to tackle the problem.

Good question. It might be a double edged sword with a psychiatric component initially which then the physiological responses (strength/aggression) re-inforce the pyschological addiction. It certainly warrants more research. Coming off steroids appears to have both pyschological and physiological affects so by implication the addiction maybe a double whammy. Agree though that it would be a good way to determine how it should be treated. Rob

I am tired of seeing pieces like this . The fact of the matter is clear and simple. Anabolic steroids if used incorrectly can be dangerous, however if used by knowledgeable healthy adult males, steroids are generally no where near as dangerous as the media or this article specifically makes them out to be. Scientifically speaking, there are no credible studies showing steroids to be physiologically addictive. SOME steroids can be hepatoxic(liver toxic) but all aren't, and toxicity depends totally on dosage and cycling. Generalizing steroids as toxic to the liver is simply bunk. As far as the heart goes, steroids can cause heart problems but again, this all depends on the steroids used and the dose. The side effects of steroids are very rare and generally depend on the dose. The medical community has been using them safely for decades. See the wikipedia article on Anabolic Steroids which I have contributed to. It is completely sourced with scientific studies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabolic_steroi d

The media has frequently demonized anabolic steroids since the early 1990's. The fact of the matter is that the side effects of steroids are frequently overstated and often totally fabricated. Anabolic steroids are not "addictive" in the sense Morphine is addictive. There are no such things as "Cravings" for steroids. The fact that suddenly ending a steroid cycle causes depression and fatigue doesn't mean it's "addictive" anymore than the fact that suddenly stopping an antibiotic treatment makes you sick means antibiotics are addictive. Let's be truthful here.
