While all the talk just now revolves around Ricky Hatton and Wimbledon, let's take time out to hail a couple of  other people who are about to set the sporting world alight.

Lewis Hamilton and Amir Khan are two new heroes who have amazed everyone in great style by winning from the start of their careers and setting British hearts pounding with pride at the prospect of just what they might  achieve. Granted Khan has yet to fight at the very top level - but make no mistake, he will be a winner there too, and while I hate to lumber him with a label, he is more than ready to step into Hatton's shoes as the best fighter in the country and, maybe even one day, the world.

Hamilton is already a winner at the top level, having finished, first, second and third already in Grand Prix to really make everyone sit up and take notice. Not since the days of Jackie Stewart, James Hunt and Nigel Mansell have the Brits had cause to celebrate such a winning talent on the track.

'By the time the other lads had struggled down onto their exercise mats, Amir had already done around a dozen sit-ups'

I was lucky enough to watch and chart Khan's career from the tender age of 13 and I can assure you he is an amazingly fit, athletic and powerful young guy. He was a kid in the back street gym in Bury, Lancashire, run by Mike Jelley, whose dad 'Pop' Jelley had started it all before him. And when I took my lad and a few of his mates along after they had expressed an interest in the noble art, we saw young Khan in action.

By the time the other lads had struggled down onto their exercise mats, Amir had already done a around a dozen sit-ups - and, what's more, he made it look so smooth and effortless too! Khan was a winner even then at schoolboy level, repeatedly capturing the British schoolboy crown. The promise was there - and he hasn't failed to deliver in the years that have gone by so far.

What we need now is to see him in action against some tough little Mexican and then we will start to know if Amir can really be the world champion I think he can become.

It's great to see, and the forthcoming prospect of Hamilton competing in the British Grand Prix - and hopefully winning again - is a mouthwatering one. Khan is set to box again soon and it won't be long before he starts taking more meaningful steps to that world crown.

So all hail the young great British talent - and let's hope we are cheering them - and others - on for years to come.
