Anne Keothavong showed on Sunday that she is ready to challenge the WTA top 50 rankings with a stunning victory in the ITF tournament in Krakow, Poland.
The $100,000 tournament is the biggest prize of Keothavong's career by far and shows that, although a late developer, the 25-year-old is on an upward move and will be ready to continue her success at the start of next season.
She will receive 70 points for her tournament victory, which will push the British No.1 into the world's top 60, and a good couple of months in January and February will see her reach another of her career goals - a top-50 ranking.
Anne has steadily been having more and more success on the ITF and WTA tour with $50,000 tournament victories in Barnstaple and Lebanon this year and reaching the third round of the US Open, where she put up a good fight against Elena Dementieva. She is the first Brit to break into the top 100 since the beginning of the millennium and her confidence will now be at an all-time high.
Keothavong defeated a whole host of quality players in Krakow, including Russians Vesna Manisieva and Evgeniya Rodina, Estonia's Margit Ruutel and Italian former top-50 player Maria-Elena Camerin - without the loss of a single set.
Her opponent in the final was Monica Nicolescu of Romania. Niculescu has herself moved up the WTA rankings this season from a lowly 179 to just outside the top 50 in 2008. Even more of a problem for Keothavong was that Monica had defeated her three times already in 2008 without losing a set. The matches were not even close and when I saw they were playing again in Krakow, I thought Anne may have to wait a little longer for a big tournament win.
What I failed to take into account was the form of Keothavong this week. She was a totally different player. She won a tight tie-break in the first set 7-6 before dropping the second set 6-4. The third set became a battle of nerves and Keothavong eventually came out on top 6-3 to lift the trophy.
The pressure that the Brit has had throughout her career to be a new star is finally starting to lift and Keothavong is getting better and better. I don't think Britain is looking for a new Wimbledon champion in Keothavong - it will never happen! We just want to see a group of consistent players who can enter tournaments without the need of a wildcard and do their nation proud. Keothavong is slowly realising this.
On a good day for British women's tennis, junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson also won her first professional tournament on the ITF circuit in Sunderland. Although the $10,000 tournament is the lowest level on the tour, it was extremely encouraging for the youngster, who won't be 15 until January.
She should be nearing the world's top 500 next week and, although playing a limited schedule due to her age, Laura should be a top-300 player before too long.
The tournament was a great success for British junior players who made up the full semi-final line up in the event. Jennifer Ren, Tara Moore and Samantha Vickers all showed promising results in Sunderland and I think within the next three years Great Britain could have two or three top 100 girls.
Let's hope the success of the women can rub off on Murray, who prepares for his first match of the Masters Cup in Shanghai today against former world No.1 Andy Roddick.
