Australian Open – Day One
There were two big upsets on day one of the first Grand Slam Tournament of the year; fourth-seeded Croatian Ivan Ljubicic lost in the first round to American Mardi Fish, and Israeli qualifier Dudi Sela upset Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan in three straight sets. Former champion Marat Safin beat German Benjamin Becker in five tough sets.

In the women's tournament, there where no first-day surprises with all the seeds, including Serena Williams, making it through to the second round.

The atmosphere on the courts was blemished as Serb and Croat supporters started fighting while watching a match on a giant screen outside. Security personnel and police intervened with some fans being led out of Melbourne Park.

Preview - Day Two
The rest of the seeds will be in action. Rafael Nadal and Kim Clijsters can expect comfortable passages, while Leyton Hewitt will have the backing of the home crowd in his tie against American Michael Russell. Other interesting match-ups include James Blake-Carlos Moya, Andy Murray-Alberto Martin and Martina Hingis-Nathalie Dechy.
