Australian Open – Day Two
The heat was the main opponent of all players at the Australian Open today. At 6pm local time, temperatures where still soaring at 35 celsius and the organisers decided to apply the "extreme heat code" by finishing only matches already in play and not starting new ones until conditions cooled.

No fewer then 16 matches were still being played at 11.30pm local time because of the delay.

Maria Sharapova was one of those who felt the conditions - edging through her first-round match 9-7 in the final set against France's Camille Pin, while on the men's side Lleyton Hewitt was also given a scare by qualifier Michael Russell. Hewitt went two sets down but came back to win in the fifth after the American became tired and injured.

Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and James Blake where all first-round winners, while on the women's side Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters breezed through to the second round.

Preview – Day 3

Roger Federer is back on court against Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman, and so are Marat Safin, who plays Israel's Dudi Sela and Andy Roddick , who faces Gicel from France. Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo play for a spot in the third round, and a host of doubles will also get under way.
