Roger Federer has won his tenth career Grand Slam title - taking his third Australian Open crown in defeating tenth-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

With the straights-sets victory, Federer becomes the first man to win a Grand Slam tournament without dropping a set since Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon in 1980 - and the first in the Australian Open since Ken Rosewall in 1972.

The “Fed Express” by no means coasted to victory, with Gonzalez fighting to the bitter end. But Federer played the type of tennis that has earned him the repeated accolade as the greatest ever. The Swiss nullified the Chilean's powerful forehand, Federer brilliantly playing the angles to either beat Gonzalez for clean winners or force him to commit errors.

The world number one wasn't his normal self in the first set. With the roof at Rod Laver Arena open, Federer struggled with his forehand and the top-seed's usually ice-cold demeanour showed signs that he had a game on his hands.

The first set was a war of attrition, lasting 63 minutes. Gonzalez grabbed the vital break in the ninth game and when serving for the set in the next, had Federer down two set points - only for the champ to not only save those set points, but win the last four points of the game.

From there Federer took control, even though it did go to a tie-break which he won easily 7-2. Gonzalez started to make too many unforced errors and tended to deviate from his strength - the smash down the line - to play dinky soft shots that Federer simply devoured.

The Swiss was always in control of the second and third sets as Gonzalez could not pentrate Federer's serve and the Swiss was just waiting for his opponent's defences to crumble before moving in for the kill. This came in the seventh game of the second set as Gonzalez, who had managed to hold serve comfortably until that point was overvome by Federer, who lifted his game up a gear to force the break. It was all he needed, taking a two-set lead shortly after.

The third set was much like the second as games went with serve until 3-3, with Federer once again breaking Gonzalez in the seventh game. The Chilean saved two break points before finally conceding the third and that effectively handed Federer the match until Federer served out for the title.
