It’s time for the first Masters Series event of the year and the men are ready – all top ten players are here. The women? That’s another story. Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, and Kim Clijsters are staying home. It’s understandable given that Indian Wells is a two-week event followed by another two week event, Miami, and Miami is required attendance for the women.
But there’s another way to look at it. Henin just completed the “Emirates swing”: consecutive titles in Dubai and Doha - two very rich tournaments on the other side of the world from the desert town of Indian Wells. Doha has just announced that it’s doubling its prize money next year and that will make it the richest Tier I tournament and will put it ahead of Indian Wells. There are currently too many tournaments and too few top players to go around, but this example tells you why it’s unlikely to change any time soon. Tournament directors don’t want their tournaments taken away, the president of the ATP, Etienne de Villiers, doesn’t have enough clout to take them away, and the players won’t give up huge paydays.I took a lot of criticism last week for daring to suggest that round robins are a good idea but here you see a problem that round robins help solve. If you’re a small tournament and you only have one or two top twenty players, round robins keep those players in the tournament for at least two matches and help you market the event.Speaking of Dubai, Roger Federer spends a lot of time in Dubai and owns property there, but Kristian Pless is the first player I’ve seen who actually calls it home. And now I see why. Just like Monte Carlo (the usual second home for tennis players), Dubai does not charge individual residents income tax. Pless is from Denmark. If there are any Danish readers, how do the tax rates compare to the rest of Europe?Justin Gimelstob is in the draw. Didn’t he just have back surgery? Wasn’t he retired?

The reason Guga and Nadal have a winning record against Federer is because, at the beginning of his career or until Fedex figured them out, his game style offered them slow pace balls (chopping and slicing) even on hardcourts. These guys being claycourt specialists ( or more specifically slow pace specialists ) had a go at him. But now, Fedex adapted his game to these guys so, watch out for Federer winning RG/FO this time.

"Round robin helps you market the event". Is sport all about marketing? don't degenerate tennis to where professional basketball, american football, and baseball have reached. Round robin in tennis is nonsense. It should always be a knockout system, simple and clean.

I am a tennis fanatic. Have been playing tennis all my life. Also have watched almost every tennis tournament around. Never have I seen a player like Roger Federer--his consistency, percision and elegance. He has everything even power. Being #1 this long is no fluke. I predict he will beat all the records and then some. Watch out Andy Roddick as long as there is a Roger Federer to compete against, your fast serve isn't going to cut it!!! Roger just has too many more weapons against you.

Guess that isn't going to happen now, huh? Sooner or later Roddick will stand up and beat Federer on a grand stage.

Hi Ramu, Canas is not just a clay courter. He has a Masters Shield from Toronto/Montreal, a hard court Masters Series event. By the way, he played and beat Federer in that tournament.

Raj, you're right that it's not all about marketing but here's the problem. Basketball and American football have gone global but the top leagues play 99% of their games in North America. Tennis plays its matches all over the world - there can be three matches on three different continents on the same week. That means that small tournaments will get one top ten or twenty player at most and so they need to market that top player. The problem is that there are too many tournaments but since no one is going to change that, other changes might be necessary.
Hi Angela, I hope Roddick manages to beat Federer but his game doesn't match up as well as, well, Canas. Roddick makes a lot of errors and Federer returns well. Canas is aggressive enough and steady enough to lead Federer 2-1 but I have to think that Federer was hurting more than he let on. Every players denies injuries, so you never really know.
