"Incompetent"? That's a bit harsh. Roddick wasn't the only one who crapped out at the French Open, you know. And somehow I doubt you'll be calling Roddick "incompetent" when Wimbledon (a real major with history, honor, and prestige) rolls around.

Jake, A couple of things on your comment. First, I think when Andy Roddick plays 6 feet behind the baseline on clay it demonstrates a level of incompetence with respect to playing on clay. His game is not built to win that way. He has to take the ball on the rise and move his opponents around, yet he chooses to try and grind out against players who are better at doing that than he is. On grass or other fast surfaces, I would never characterize his game as incompetent. He stays closer to the baseline and is more effective being aggressive. I would have to disagree with your slight of the French Open not being a real major. It's probably the toughest one to win and it has had its share of great champions.

I agree that American's are horrible clay cour players. I've played for fun for over two decades and have never played on clay (or grass for that matter). The only clay courts I know of are in Houston and some other place in Florida. Still, clay is the dominant court in Europe and Latin America-- a huge part of our tennis world. But how many countries out there have grass courts as their predominant court? Is Wimby a major because of tradition? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the majors split into what the real world plays.

It is funny how Spaniards or those who mpstly play on clay are branded as"grinders", or "clay court specialists", although they take the time and initiative to travel to other countries ( like US And Australia) and take part in hard court events. People are not born with clay or hard cour genes. They needsomething called "practice". How did Agassi win on clay? The level of preparation of American players was"Zero". Federer is the best player in the world and NAdal is the best on clay . yet they both played in at least 3-4 clay tournaments before FO. Federer even lost in Rome but was not deterrerd. The Americans were just plain lazy and arrogant and they deserved the humiliation. Let's see what they will cook for us in Wimbledon!
