Watching both men's semi-finals at the French Open on Friday left me wondering what the players not named Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal must think to themselves in tournaments of this magnitude.
One's heart really went out to both Nikolay Davydenko and Novak Djokovic. They tried so hard and ended up with nothing to show for their efforts.
Both matches typified the style in which each of Sunday's finalists like to dismiss the opposition. Federer let his formidable Russian foe Davydenko make all the running before moving in for the kill, while Nadal allowed the brave young Serb, who looks certain to be a future world No.1, see the promised land before poking him in both eyes to make sure his aspirations were turned to dust.
Barring the majority of Spanish tennis fans and Nadal's family and friends, I don't think there are too many out there who want Nadal to win another Roland Garros title. But will Federer's elegance and poise, his superior all-round game and mental toughness be enough to stop the single-minded determination, the brute force, stamina and the formidable tennis skill which is the essence of Nadal?
In normal clay-court conditions, I do not think so. In Paris, Nadal is too tough an opponent even for the great Federer.
Djokovic played out of his skin against Nadal and came so close, but in the end the Mallorcan got his man.
You can be certain that if Federer, who is normally a slow starter, doesn't get off to a flyer, then he has no chance. In last year's final, he won the first set 6-1, but for him it was all downhill from there and as soon as Nadal got into the fray, there was going to be only one winner.
Most tennis fans -- and I am no exception -- think that Federer is good enough to win the Grand Slam, and if he does so, it will be a far greater feat than the one won by Donald Budge and the two by Rod Laver. Neither of those legends of the game had to face an obstacle as formidable on one surface as Nadal is today.
Steffi Graf's Golden Grand Slam, in which she won all four majors and the Olympic gold medal in the women's singles tournament at the Barcelona Games in 1992, is unlikely ever to be repeated for pretty obvious reasons. But that is a singular highlight in the annals of modern tennis - and so would be Federer's victory in the event that he finds the secret code to unravelling Nadal's game.
I could make a few comparisons to what a Grand Slam feat by Federer would be equal to in the history of sport, but I think I would be wasting good words at this stage, so I'll wait.
To Nadal, I will say this: Your uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal, who played for Barca and the Spanish national team in the 1980s and 90s, was known as the 'Beast of Barcelona' for his formidable abilities to break up the opposition's attacks. You don't need to take those traits with you onto the tennis court.
We know you are a decent fellow and an honest sportsman, but why don't you try to look as if you are enjoying what you do? There is never any positive expression on your face, it’s always a frown or a wince and it doesn't do your image any good.
And for goodness sake, get a decent pair of tennis shorts!

Actually I think for Nadal this is enjoyment and passion. He looks to me like he's having a blast. However, those pirate pants are causing a number of problems which are evident, and upon which I don't need to elaborate. Otherwise I agree, everyone in the whole world is holding their breath for Roger to gather all his great skills together into a moment in time to produce his best game. There's no doubt that his best game can win.As he did in last years Masters where he scared us all by almost loosing to Roddick, but then coming through with a very agressive win against Nadal in the Semis. Do it Roger.

Rafa is not a misery guts as you say, he is concentrating on important matches, once the matches are over his persona changes. Also it's not only the Spanidh fans who want Rafa to win tomorrow his I'm from England & I want him to make it 3 in a row. Roger looks quite miserable on court but none comments on that they are out to win,

I am a huge Nadal fan & I hail from Canada. Nadal truly enjoys his game & I get that because He takes me to the game halfway around the world & I feel like I am at the game instead of in front of my tv set. The man who wrote the above article is critisizing the facial expressions & clothing? Are we talking about tennis or what? Nadal has MILLIONS of fans! Nadal Rocks!

I am an Indian and a great Nadal fan.I really think that the auther ori lewis was not in proper state of mind while writing this article. So many people around the world started to follow tennis because of nadal.I think it is your preconceived notion to think that people love roger the arrogent only. When Nadal came to India to play in Chennai open people thronged the stadium in an unprecedent way. Before Nadal came tennis was never followed intensively in India.I am sure that it is the same in many other countries.Ori,it is high time that you understand the reality that people around the world independent of their nationality enjoys Nadal`s game and support great Rafael Nadal.I hope nadal defenitely will beat your federer in straight sets.

Hello Everyone & especially the author of this article, Ori Lewis. Firstly, I am from NYC & I am not Spanish & I think Rafael Nadal is terrific for tennis & I hope he wins the French Open for the 3rd str8 time on Sunday & many more times. Hopefully, breaking Bjorn Borg's record of 4 consecutive & 6 overall French Opens. Secondly, Federer won the 1st set of last year's final 6-1, not 6-0. Thirdly, Nadal is always positive & energetic on court. If you see him frowning, it's because he probably missed a shot he was aiming for. Are you saying Federer is always smiling & lovable on court? What matches of these guys have you been watching? I never really understand extreme Federer fans. You should be happy that they have each other. We all should. W/O both of these guys, tennis would be truly boring. Tennis needs rivalries between players with contrasting styles & attitudes.

I don't know what was the purpose of this article. You obviously have no idea about Nadal and his fan base. Where did you gather the information that apart from Spanish fans No one wants Rafa to win? I for one, am not Spanish and I wanted Rafa to win and I know many non-Spanish ones who had the same wish. But is this a matter of charity? Or best wishes? Or is it a matter of talent and tennis? If the latter, than let whoever plays better win.without any bias! One reason that Nadal wins on clay so easily, is that he loves playing tennis. He wrote in his blog that if he didn't play professionally, he would have played in a club. He is a fighter and a warrior on the court . Not an entetainer. You may not like his facial expressions, but I do. By the way what is the facial expression of other players? Federer? Davydenko? Serena? Do they laugh or dance? This is serious business! As a reader I would much rather read articles on technical analysis of tennis matches than a personal and emotional reaction to

It does not sound like this author has any idea about what brilliance Rafa brings to the beautiful sport of tennis. I love him for all he brings to the sport and I will continue to do so for the whole of his career.

In term of commentator, you failed to analyse two F/O semi matches to be the same. They're absolutely different. Fed hardly survived, blamed it to Davy's shaky. Rafa won beutifully while Djoko fought bravely with no shake. How could they be the same? Rafa really enjoys his tennis and so do all of his fans around the world, may be except you? He brings the world to tennis and tennis to the world. I'm addicted to the sport because of him. Let alone his appearance and personality which all of his fans think they are all great, fit to his body. I always love his capri pants, never seen anyone looks as great wearing them as he is. I love his fiercely, determined actions on court and even love more watching his love humble manner off court. You, who are not his fan or even a fair commentator has never been able to understand. Plese let your editor read all these comments upon your this article and he will know what to do with you.
