Federer will retire as the best tennis player in the sport's history (though Laver remains up there next to him). The emergence of Nadal will only underline Federer's dominance.

To win five in a row is fantastic. Its incredible. Now Federer has beaten Roddick and Nadal twice each on his way to glory. This final was perhaps a treat to watch as it was something of the highest level. Real quality tennis that can be seen only when these two play. As the match progressed it looked like Nadal was the one who's going to win and for Federer to stage a comeback from a near hopless position was remarkable. That stamp of class was there for all to see in that final set. Federer is a truly great champion.

Em no, let's not get carried away. Pete Sampras? He was number (1) in the ATP rankings for 6 consecutive years, a record not matched by anyone yet. He also won Wimbledon 7 times, the US open 5 times and the Aussie open twice so no, I won't be getting caught up in the knee jerk nonsense everyone else seems to be and disagree with you wholeheartedly.

Federer playing badly!.Well, you must be kidding.Federer was forced to play at his maximum best by Nadal, that with some luck Nadal would have won wimbledon. For sure Nadal is going to be no 1 in very short period, displacing federer.

Laver did win 2 GSs, which is phenomenal, but if that makes him the GOAT, then we wouldn't have heard of Sampras' 14 GS a zillion times now. The thing is once people changed the yardstick from beating two GSs to 14 GS to suit Sampras, they cannot change the yardstick back again now. But back to Roger. Tracy Austin, Andre Agassi, and Bud Collins know a little bit about tennis, as all would agree. Tracy has seen all the #1s in the world - both men and women upclose. She said Roger handles the #1 position better than anyone else she saw. Andre beat and lost to pretty much all the greats. He said there was a place to go against Sampras, but none against Federer. He clearly said that F
