Roger Federer won the Wimbledon final playing below his accepted standards. He was of out of sorts on the day - or you can say he was put under tremendous pressure by Rafael Nadal, who chased the Swiss master and made him run to all corners of the court throughout the match.

Federer did show a glimpse of his class in the way he won his sets, and his best shots were better than Rafa’s best shots - particularly those special volleys. Nadal, on the other hand, looked consistently threatening, the deciding moments of the match being the crucial exception. On the day, Federer, although playing below par, proved to be much the luckier of the two.

I’ve never seen such a cliffhanger before. The match could have gone either way right up to the very last moment and you simply could not predict the outcome at any stage.

Hats off to Rafa for the fight he put up, not only against Federer but it seemed against the Almighty as well, who seemed to favour Federer when it mattered the most.

Nadal is looking a better player with each passing tournament. He looked the fitter of the two players and although Federer has equalled Bjorn Borg’s record of five Wimbledon titles in succession, he’s not likely to come back next year to win the sixth. And I reckon he knows it, too.
