Last year Maria Sharapova won five titles, including her second Slam at Flushing Meadow. She came into 2007 as a hot favourite to dominate the WTA Tour and the Grand Slams. But who would have thought that this year would turn out to be so horrible for the leading lady of Russia?

This is what 2007 has inflicted on the world No.2 and the daunting possibilities of the US summer.

Steamrollered by Serena: Maria reached her third Grand Slam final in Australia, with an impressive win over Kim Clijsters in straight sets. She met Serena Williams, many expected Maria to put a stop to the impressive comeback. But nobody thought that Maria would take an astonishing 6-1, 6-2 bludgeoning from the American. Maria looked helpless as the magnificent Williams hit  winners passed her. We saw tears from the Russian as a tennis player's worst nightmare took a stranglehold.

'Who would have thought that this year would turn out to be so horrible for the leading lady of Russia?'

Injury in Tokyo: As a former champion in Tokyo and a semifinalist last year, it should have given Maria confidence. But she needed to re-compose herself on the indoor carpet in Tokyo after her crashing in Australia. Young gun Ana Ivanovic reached her first final in Tokyo, and took the first set 6-1, Maria carried a left hamstring strain throughout the match and decided to give up at 1-0 up in the second set. The injury continued to upset Maria's season as it forced her to withdraw from Dubai.

Back-to-back fourth-round losses: Defending her Indian Wells title this year, Maria looked for her first title in America. Despite leading 5-3 in the second set, she lost her way to fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva in a 6-4, 5-7, 1-6 defeat. She was in a tough draw this year in Miami, a mouthwatering third round match against Venus Williams, who was on her second comeback tournament. Maria found her way passed the three-time Miami champion in a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory. But younger sister Serena took revenge in the next round, beating the Russian to a pulp, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Claycourt brings great form: Back-to-back semi finals in Istanbul and the French Open showed a lot of promise and great play from the Russian. Serbia's hot shot, Ivanovic, ended Maria's best run at Roland Garros. Sharapova also saved two match point against Patty Schnyder in the fourth round in Paris, despite being booed.

Maria takes to the grass: Following her traditional Wimbledon warm up, Maria headed to Birmingham. As a former winner here in 2004 and 2005, it gave Maria confidence as she reached the final. Serbia's world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic defeated Sharapova 6-4, 3-6, 5-7. Wimbledon arrived and Maria displayed some superb tennis in the first week. She came into her fourth round match as the favourite, against Venus Williams who struggled in the first week. Venus demolished and dismantled the hard-hitting Russian 6-1, 6-3. Although Maria was simply outplayed by the eventual champion, she showed great from both on the clay and the grass, signs that her injury problems were fading.

Injury strikes at Fed Cup: The ongoing shoulder injury forced Maria to postpone her Fed Cup debut yet again and she came under heavy fire from the Russian team captain, Shamil Tarpishchev who said that her decision not to play was influenced by the fact that the opponents were the U.S.A. He said it didn't feel right to invite her to the final and as a result her chances of playing in the Olympics next year now look slimmer than ever.

What's next? Maria will turn her attention to the North American heat for the final Grand Slam of the year in New York. She will have the heavy burden of defending her tier one title in San Diego and her major at Flushing Meadow, but if she doesn't perform well she could be in for a lengthy tumble down the rankings. Sharapova's ongoing shoulder injury could wreak havoc. but she has already shown that she can perform well this season. You might think that things couldn't get more difficult for the injury-prone Russian when considering that the competition this year is incredible with the daunting William sisters, Justine Henin and Serbia's two young gunners are all also planning to home in on the U.S. Open title.

One thing that is not in any doubt is that Maria is a fighter on and off the court, and has the ability and the potential to grab her third Grand Slam title with next month with both hands.
