I've got to say, when news broke last week that Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev was not going to invite world No.2 and Russian No.1 Maria Sharapova to the finals in September, I was a little bamboozled. OK, I can understand and respect that he was going to give priority to the players who worked so hard to get them into finals, but to completely dismiss your country's best player is, frankly, a little odd.
Tarpischev was reported to have said that it wouldn't be right to invite Sharapova, (who missed the two previous rounds of Fed Cup, due to a recurring injury) stating that he was going to stick to the original line-up that won the semi-final tie against USA. But he then revealed he would invite former US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, who also missed the semi-final tie due to an injury.
Tarapischev's decision looked a little sketchy. I suppose Russia are fortunate enough to have so many players to chose from, but I couldn't understand when you have the world No.2 making herself available, why would you completely dismiss her? Isn't competitive sport all about winning? It just sounded a little unprofessional, which is not something you would usually associate with Russian tennis.
So I wasn't surprised today when I logged into Sharapova's website, www.mariasharapova.com , to find her side of the story. Sharapova states that she spoke to Tarpischev and he told her that she was always invited to play. The conspiracy which surrounded him saying otherwise was him being "misquoted" by the media. She continues to state that she is making herself available, but understands if he decides to chose the original line-up. She ends her statement by saying either way she will be cheering for Russia.
It looks like Tarapischev has got some important decsions ahead of him. Does he stay loyal to the lesser-ranked players who brought their country to the final? Or does he go for the dream line-up which would include Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova and Anna Chakvetadze? No doubt there will be some unhappy bunnies this September. But that's sport isn't it?

I WANT Maria to play for Russia

No way. Masha should be left out - no offence to her (even though I really dislike her) but the impression I have is that most of the Russian team don't like her and don't want her there. Some of them grew up together and most are still friends in the locker room whereas Sharapova isn't part of the Russian clan on tour - other than Kirilenko she has no Russian friends and, personally, I think she upsets the flavour of the current team.

My opinon is why shouldn't she play? Everyone has this thing about her "Russian" status, but in my opinon she has the right to play for her country. She was born there, has won 2 grand slam titles under Russia. Sure she hasn't spent most of her life there, but really not many players have spent time in there home land. People should be happy that the world number 2 is at least showing a desire to play.

Maria should make up her mind and apply for US citizenship. After all she lives, speaks, acts and thinks like an American for the major part of her life.

Sharapova isn't performing too well right now, and i think the other Russians could beat her at the moment. Russian players like Nadia Petrova and Anna Chakvetadze have worked really hard to get to the final, now Maria comes and they have to drop out to make room for her. Players like Petrova and Chakvetadze have earned their spots in the final!!!

If she realised the politicization of tennis as in everything in Russia Sharapova would feel less miffed. The recent revalation that the Super sub was torpedoed by the americans and covered up by both the americans and russians after a handsome debt relief programe was agreeed by and donated by the americans; there was also the generous extension of a several billion dollar loan to the russians. Ms Sharapova should quit ehile when she's ahead ,deflect to the west, sign up with Dior or Prada or Nike get a coke habit , go in to rehab , appear on celebrity TV ; sign the gohts written book deal ; appear as a doe eyed hard done by siberian peasent of orthodox extraction - her father being an arch bishop in the Eastern Right snd after actick as a house maid to a hollywood diva she spends all her time off pracicing tennis against the back wall and finally makes it to wombleton where the bearded old man at the centre court is of course the father - the hoary old goat- but she wins and ebreaces him ans the detente b
