While all eyes have been on tops seeds Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic, a contingent of Russians have charged through to the quarter-finals of the Acura Classic.
Of the last eight this year, Jankovic is nowhere to be seen, bowing out to a resilient Maria Kirilenko - and five of the quarter-finalists are Russian. The US summer hard-court season usually brings out the best Russia has to offer - but this year's domination is unprecedented.
Jankovic has come under scrutiny after this and her last match at Wimbledon, where she lost to Marion Bartoli. In both encounters she was pushed to three tough sets. This time it was Kirilenko who pushed and broke. So why is it that the Russian girls are playing fearlessly and dominating?
The first reason is down to coaching at the famed Spatchit Club in Moscow, which combines with natural height, agility and determination to make future champions.
Then comes camaraderie, where the girls help each other at difficult times and also adds an element of competitiveness. Russia certainly has this. The Russian girls are friends but also are fierce competitors.
The final theory is that many of the Russian girls play doubles, which gives you extra skills to transfer to singles and also a sense of team spirit. Anna Chadvataze has become a great doubles player in recent months and she is joined by regular doubles mates Svetlana Kuznetsova, Dinara Safina, Nadia Petrova and Kirilenko.
There is something to be said for coaches and players in Russia. Perhaps something we can all take a look at!

Come on....seriously....Maria Kirilenko has a few good matches and you are saying she's impressive....not quite. What is impressive is Patty Schnyder's run at this tournament....Anna Chakvetadze's win over Venus...and Elena Dementieva's win over Bartoli....forget about Kirilenko. Not to mention Dementieva handled her today.

I guess Kirilenko had a nice run....but her only good match was in beating Jankovic....Your article was interesting but not very well written.

Kirilenko played really good this tournament, but you can't add her to the big name Russians. Most Russians seem to adopt an aggressive gameplan, they do seem to be really good friends (excluding Maria Sharapova), on court and off.

I think that you guys commenting have missed the point. the article wasnt about kirilenko but rather all the russians. I think the writer is correct in what he says about the depth of Russian tennis

I completely agree with this article. I live in Belgium and we had the same thing here with kim and Justine and they encouraged Kirsten Flipkens and Caroline Maes. The write is right the commeraderie helps the players but national pride pushes them to out do each other and besides it about time someone actually said what the hole world thinks about the Russians. Good on them! And go Chadvataze that was an awesome win over Williams.

Many of you guys missed the point here. The writer is not saying that Maria Kirilenko is the best he is saying that she is one element of the growing world tennis domination that is Russia - just like it was a few years ago for the US. Besides I think that Kirilenko did very well. it was after 7-5 in the third, not like Jelena played a double bagel.

There certainly must be something in the water at the Spatchit club as not only are 3 of the 4 womens semis at the Acrua Classic Russian, Vera Dushevina has made the semi in Stockholm. I agree, Russia are on top.

although i would agree with the rest of the comments that Kirilenko is still far away from earning the privilege to be included in the group of great Russian players, there definitely is a lot to be said about Russian tennis. firstly, i believe that their booming success over the last few years has to be contributed to the work of the Russian coaches... it's simply impossible to produce such a quantity of quality players without a good method or system of work... proof for this can be found in men's tennis. many new bright Russian prospects are appearing in the men's game... another important factor is the drive that these women have, a drive that is more prominent in players from the former eastern bolock (Hantuchova, Safarova, Vaidisova, etc). these girls come from poor countries and backgrounds, and playing tennis and being good at it is often not optional, but a question of "do or die". they simply have to play and be great at it, since they have no other options. finally, their great numbers encourage

Kirilenko pretty much is a nobody on tour and she will never challenge for a major or Tier 1 event.
