Former world No.1 Martina Hingis and ATP Tour player Radek Stepanek have ended their engagement. "Radek asked me to pass on a message announcing that he and Martina Hingis have split up but will remain good friends -- and that's all he has to say," spokesman Stephen Duckitt said shortly after Stepanek's semi-final loss to top-seed Roger Federer at the Rogers Cup on Saturday. The reason for the split-up was not disclosed by Stepanek's camp. Meanwhile, there is still no official comment from Hingis who, by the way, recently rose a notch higher in world ranking to No.12. 'Only time will tell how Hingis will come out from this personal issue she is currently facing'It was only last December that Hingis announced her engagement to Stepanek, who was formerly ranked in the top 10 by the ATP. At first the Slovak-born Hingis preferred to keep things private. However, when she was spotted wearing a diamond engagement ring during a practice session in Australia, she happily announced their engagement to the press. Where does the Swiss Miss go from here? She has already withdrawn from next week's WTA event in Toronto due to back problems while Stepanek has successfully come back from a nerve injury affecting his hand, winning 12 of 14 matches before losing to Federer. With the break-up out in the open, tennis fans could only doubt the sincerity of Hingis' back injury. It could be that her withdrawal from Toronto is to give her time to heal a more important "emotional injury", as well as to buy time with the press and finally issue her official stand.

I am pretty sure we will never find out what caused the break up. One thing though, this would mean Hingis can now focus on her tennis career. If you will try to recall, she performed at her BEST when she is single... My bets are on her this coming USO! Go chuckie!

What I heard is that the break up was caused because they have little time for each other... They are tournaments apart. And nobody would like to slow it down. Well may be they are better of apart and just focus what they both do best - TENNIS. Nice article Eric

She could only climb the raking as a result of this break up. She better off single to perform well during the slams.

I agree with some of the comments, Hingis will most likely concentrate more on tennis. She really needs to find form and shake off her injury. Hope Hingis the best of luck.

This is the best thing that ever happened to Stepanek's career. The history of male players linked to "Chucky" is grim.

personaly i think she could do better. the guy was totally butt ugly and a dork. bottom line is she needs to focus on her game if she is going to win another slam. she has the talent and the game. she just needs to stop playing not to lose. and find the killer instinct that mader her what she was. which was a grand slam champion.

Now that she's "available' do you guys desire to see her in short skirts again? I don't think Radek could handle those buns :D

Lets see...Magnus Norman, Sergio Garcia, Chris Calkin (her attorney during her stalking case), and countless others. Martina is running through them!! Think she will ever slow down?
