good article... but i don't think it's fair to discuss the rise of serbian tennis without one mention of jelena jankovic... she was also a no one 4 years ago, and now she's number three in the womens' game.... other than that i agree completely with the article.. the serbs are no longer coming; they are here and they're a formidable force to be reckoned with... and i love them and the way they play ....

Bravo to Djokovic, Ivanovic and Jankovic, and bravo to Serbia. It's always great when a small country, against all the odds, does so well.

Yorthae, Good point about Janky. I didn't include her in the article because I just wanted to focus on Djoko and Ana, since they both won titles on Sunday. Jankovic is no doubt a pioneer in the Serbian game as well, and she happens to be my favorite player! I certainly include her in my favorites (along with Ana) to win the USO. Thanks for the comment!

Excuse me if I am wrong but Jankovic , Henin and Kuznetseva are at the Rogers Cup so not entirely 'depleted of top-tier players' .
Sasha. Indeed, Janky, JH and Kuz are all playing in Canada, but this is a Tier I tournament! Last week in LA - a Tier II - there was Sharapova, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Petrova Hingis and Dementieva. Plus, Vaidisova, Sharapova, Serena, Venus, Mauresmo and Hingis have all PULLED OUT of Canada. That, my friend, is a depletion of top-tier players.

They are the best players ever, and Serbia is definitely next tennis force. We are maybe a small country, but with people who can show what patriotism means.
hey marina, do i have your permission to quote you in an article?
Yes,of course be my guest.
thx marina ;)

It's also worth noting that Canadian tennis stars Daniel Nestor and Frank Dancevic are of Serbian descent (first generation).

Good article. Let me preface my comment by saying I'm glad Serbians are excelling, and Jankovic is a favorite of mine. A few years ago Belgium had two women a the top of the WTA. Oddities occur. With due respect to Kirsten Flipkens, Elke Clijsters and the Rochus bros, Belgium did not become a tennis power. A welcome aberration is still an aberration.

I'm arriving late for the comment: no, it's not a Serbian takeover in tennis, I think : )) What with all the Russian and Spanish players there-here, others in the top 100. I'm the most 'nervous' watching Jankovic, supporting her like mad, Ana doesn't bring much emotions, and I adore Djokovic in every way as a tennis personality and a fun tennis player. Comments like Marina's are driving me crazy. I didn't start watching tennis yesterday, and I can appreciate a good player or a game, being a Serb or not, and I'm soooo annoyed to read things by my compatriots like 'small proud country, patriotism..."

The former Yougoslavia was the victim of ethnic war during the training of all those big names in tennis today. In spite of this, they can form world class champion. We in Canada, at peace for all those years, cannot produce an tennis player that will survive the qualifications of small tournaments. Can somebody explain this to me?
by nemanja on August 25, 2007
i'll explain. I lived in canada for 7 years and no offence but when it comes to sport, hockey is the one and ONLY sport canadians are dominant. and I mean DOMINANT. Waterpolo, definately not. Serbia whooped Canada 16-2 the other day. Soccer...no. Tennis... no. Basketball ....no. I don't know about baseball and football because I don't follow them (two dumbest sports in opinion although baseball is fun to play, boring to watch).
