Britain's Andy Murray battled his way into the third round of the US Open despite being stretched to a topsy-turvy five sets 5-7 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-1 by a gallant Jonas Bjorkman.

Murray gained much needed court time; not to mention scrapping out a crucial win that could spell the beginning of a run deep into this year’s championship.

On the comeback trail from a wrist injury that kept him out of the French Open and Wimbledon, Murray started to show promising signs of regaining the form that has had onlookers touting him as a serious Grand Slam threat for over a year now.

Looming opponents such as Nikolay Davydenko and James Blake might soon feel the weight of Murray’s quirky mix of unique shot selections and unexpected power from the back of the court if he continues to build on the form he showed against the veteran Swede.

After showing his lack of match practice by dropping a tight first set, Murray settled into a dominant pattern; keeping the Swede off balance. Bjorkman continually buckled under the pressure Murray built by going for too much on his shots, particularly his forehand.

In the fourth set, Murray lost concentration and Bjorkman eagerly capitalised taking the match to a fifth set. The oldest man in the draw used his experience to good measure but Murray calmly regained his form, breaking Bjorkman three times in the decider to reaffirm his dominance and show his fans that he is again ready to start fulfilling his potential.
