Jelena Jankovic has won more titles this year then Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova is beating Venus Williams in their head-to-head. Despite these facts, a closer inspection clearly shows a wide and obvious gap between the likes of Sharapova and the likes of Justine Henin. Sharapova and the Serbians haven't been around as much as the Williams sisters and Henin. But they are constantly being compared to them as equal and great competition.
Sharapova is no match, and she knows it: Some people try to hide the truth, Sharapova has beaten Venus Williams three times compared to the American's two wins. Let's take Miami earlier this year, when Maria beat Venus 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. The Russian was still coming off a shoulder injury and a confidence injury (no prizes for guessing where that came from). But Venus was coming off a devastating left-wrist injury, in only the second event of her comeback. Both made an array of unforced errors, but some may argue that Sharapova should have cleaned up better, keeping in mind the current form of Venus. The Russian screamed with joy as she converted on match point, knowing that the win was huge. But when Venus and Sharapova are in great form, I wonder what happens? Let's just say words don't do justice for the thrashing Venus gives her.
So what about the mental mind of Sharapova? Well, it's obvious she's a tough one, but she is reduced to dust when facing the Williams sisters. After the bludgeoning in Australia from Serena, Sharapova was down with a shoulder injury. But when she did play it was obvious her confidence hit rock bottom, another meeting with Serena in Miami couldn't have helped one bit. Some people say that she made up the shoulder injury, just to hide from her humiliation. But she has finally found form this year, in San Diego. The fact still remains, that the long and frustrating mental blow hardly shows a true champion's mentality.
The Russian doesn't seem to be mentally scared of Henin who has outclassed her many times. Sharapova's two wins against her includes last year's US Open final. But Henin was hardly in good form, the Belgian took revenge in Madrid later that year. They have yet to meet this year, but Henin is without a doubt the better player. Right now Sharapova is trailing in the US Open, but what will happen next time she crashes out against a Williams sister?
Serbian sensations don't measure up: Jankovic and Ivanovic are obviously no match against Henin and the Williams sisters. They are young and learning, Ivanovic reached her first Grand Slam final but broke down, Jankovic ruined her first Grand Slam final chances last year. They put their heart and soul in every match and reel in the results. So if the Serbians are no match against Henin and the Williams sisters, why do they do so well in the Grand Slams? When the Williams sisters and Henin are injured or not in good form, they might not be able to live up to their Grand Slam positions. Ivanovic and Jankovic are next in line to fill up their places, they are consistent enough to do so. The elegant and hard-hitting Serbians have a bright future. Some say they might be able to raise their game and mind to the standard the Williams sisters and Henin set.
They have to settle for second best: The Serbians' and Sharapova's work has to be admired, they are great players. But despite all the facts and results they bring, the Williams sisters and Henin are still alone at the top of the game. Unless Ivanovic, Jankovic and Sharapova show us they can hit with Henin and the Williams sisters, they will have no choice but to settle for second best.

there is no way to compare the williams siters and henin with sharapova and the serbian duo... the formare three have been around for a vary long time and have amassed a number of grand slam and other titles... the latter three haven't been around for long time. they show great potential and are still young enough to achieve great things.. i guess that only time will tell if they will live up to the expectations and be able to stand side by side to the amercins and the begian... personally, i think that ivanovic has the potential to win all 4 slams like serena did... maria will surely do good (and alread has 2 slams which is a proof enough), but they are still not in the league with the williamses or henin

The article just proved that the author does not have a clue in relation to tennis game. It smels on prejudice! There is no substance behind author(s) conclusion.

Hi i'm the author. Michael who are you to say that i don't have a clue about tennis. Oh, i forgot your a physiogist and this factor makes you the smartest man alive, the proof of your ignorance is in Torria's latest article about commentators. This article is hardly prejudice. I stand by my article. I admit that it is very different to most articles i write, but it makes a lot of sense.

Hi, does the author know that if he'll compare the results of Sharapova to those of Henin and the sisters achieved up to the age of 20 years old Sharapova clearly has much better results then each one of them? Sharapova became 20 in April this year. The author is simply comparing apples to oranges.

Sharapova, Jankovic and Ivanovic are up there and considered top contenders, by professionals, for strong reasons, not just to talk some random stuff. Specifically, Jankovic has won the last 3 matches against Venus Williams, 2 of them this year, so obviously facts speak for themselves. I don't know what kind of chances Jankovic has on Tuesday thought, since she seems to be tiring out, and not as motivated , after this crazy year she's had and having played and won more matches than any other player in the world.

SORRY LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BUT THIS YEARS US OPEN TELLS ALL. VENUS ONCE AGAIN DEMOLISHED ANA IVANOVIC, AND TUESDAY SERENA WILL GIVE JUSTINE HENIN WHAT SHE DESERVES. SHARAPOVA IS ALREADY OUT AND JANKOVIC IS TO TIRED TO PUT UP MUCH A FIGHT AGAINST VENUS, SO THAT LEAVES VENUS AND SERENA IN THE SEMI-FINAL.. IM TAKING VENUS ALL THE WAY.. THE POINT IS SHARAPOVA AND THE SERBS ARE IN A CLASS OF THERE OWN, BUT ITS A CLASS BELOW THAT OF THE WILLIAMS AND HENIN. SERENA ALREADY HAS ALL FOUR MAJORS, VENUS AND HENIN HAVE BEEN TO THE FINALS OF ALL FOUR, SO ITS PRETTY SAFE TO SAY THEY ARE ACCOMPLISHED AND IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. THE SERBS AND SHARAPOVA WILL DO WELL IN THEIR CAREER'S BUT NOT UNTIL THE WILLIAMS SISTERS AND HENIN ARE READY FOR THEM TO DO WELL.!!!!

Denny, the author isn't really comparing. Yeah he says that Henin, and the Williams sisters are better but gives proof and explains the facts against it, some people rank Sharapova and the Serbians with them. Mark, the author has already explain the Venus and Sharapova head-to-head. Can't you see the same thing in the Jankovic one. Some people may find this article complexed in meaning, but it really makes a lot of sense. I really like it. I think Ivanovic and Jankovic can reach Henin's and the Williams sisters's level. Great work from the author.

What i have to say to Denny and Mark is already stated in Maxy's comment. For anyone who comments on this article, please read it first. I thought that i didn't have to mention Jankovic and Venus head-to-head as the Sharapova one is pretty much the same. Beervirgin is right, finding the problem in Mark's comment. One of the points i made in the article is that facts can elude people. Jankovic is obviously no match for Venus, there both in-form and you will see the result of an in-form clash in the US Open QF.

I'm really not sure jankovic will ever win a grand slam. yeah she's pretty good, but appears unable to raise her game to the level required when it comes to grand slams. henin and the williamses are clearly in a league of their own, and venus may just rise above the three. sharapova may yet become the force she was if she can rediscover that sheer force of will she displayed most of last year.

Agree with you - the young crop of tennis phenoms continually falls flat when confronted with the brutal will of Henin and the Williams. This year's breakthrough will go to Anna Chakvetadze. With the lower half of the draw decimated, the most consistent and mentally tough proven closer is Chakvetadze. After the upper half engages in its warfare that leaves the ultimate winner wounded, watch for Chakvetadze to clear away the debris and capture her first Grand Slam trophy.

I really do like the writers comments even though I don't agree with everything he said. Sharapova is really no match for anyone except the qualifiers and will never be a match for anyone if the wta doesn't stop doing what they are doing with the draws. At present the only people she could genuinely beat are the many qualifiers she gets to play in every grand slam and the injured Venus, Serena and others as long as they are injured. Sharapova did not win Wimbledon in 2004, Serena lost it to injury, she was just comming off of knee surgery and her sister's murder along with other things. That same year Venus was robbed when she was playing against Carolina Sprem, and Venus couldn't see it, that only tells you where her concentration was. Where is Sprem today, does anyone know. When Sharapova won US Open last year, Henin was dealing with marital problems and an eventual divorce. I am still waiting to see her beat someone of any caliber when they are in the right frame of mind and uninjured. It is very wicke

That should have been Monday, not Tuesday, night
