It was one of the most boring Grand Slams ever, at least as far as the women's tournament was concerned. There is something about women's tennis today that makes every match look the same. It's as if someone took a computer and programmed the players to hit every ball exactly the same way and stay clear of the net as if getting too close could cause someone to take ill. The only thing that makes the players stand out are the fashions and the language used to curse after a bad mistake.
I don't know if anyone noticed but the crowd also voted with their feet at various stages of the tournament, including the first semi-final yesterday between the two Russians Svetlana Kuznitsova and Anna Chevakadze - and rightly so. It was one of the most boring matches seen at that stage of the tournament.
The only chance for a great final died yesterday with Venus Williams' loss to Justine Henin. One of the only players on the women's tour that still ventures to the net once in a while, lost to Henin's fighting spirit and left us with what looks to be a sure winner later today. There is no way Kuznitzova can beat Henin. She is a "grey" player, with no big weapon and lack of any kind of personality.
Not that Henin is any better. She is a great player, don't get me wrong, but her demeanor and attitude remind me of Martina Hingis in her childish days before her comeback, when she used to walk around the tennis court with a sarcastic smile on her face that had "slap me!" written all over it.
I found myself this last two weeks actually missing Marion Bartoli. Wimbledon this year was exciting because of her. With all her funny behavior and strange superstitions she actually made it interesting. Tennis needs many more players like her – unconventional, not afraid of the "big" names, with a different style of play and personality, players with a new aura that will actually make me feel like waking up at 2am to watch them.
When Henin and Kuznitzova play the final today I will make sure no one wakes me up. It's a pity to wake up only to watch tennis that has all the ingredients of a good sleeping pill. I can only hope the Men's last stages deliver and save the last Grand Slam of 2007.

You are being totally harsh. It's probably a proven fact that one semi final is always better than the other. And for your information, Kuznetsova is a fantastic player with one of the best forehands going around. If she tries hard enough, she can win the title today. Try and be a bit nicer you wannabe critic

Um, Justine comes into the net often. It's Kuznetsova too by the way.

There is a difference between personality and eccentricity: and the carefully crafted public image of certain players is hardly character, it isn't real personality, and it certainly isn't natural eccentricity...neither is dressing like a whore (or in the means case, like a bum, a tramp). I like the crop of players from eastern europe, precisely for the reasons you don't. If you want more serve and volley, your choices are either: reduce net width, dampen the ball / racket somehow to slow ball speed down.

So... what do you actually want to watch? Tennis, or interesting women? If you want entertaining personalities, go watch E! There are more than enough people who appreciate Ju's sublime backhand, her precise and calculated trajectories and the speed and elegance on court. That's what tennis is all about. Tennis is NOT about a woman blurting out her love for Pierce Brosanan... It's cute, but that's frill.

I am sure Kuznitzova tried her best and still lost in straight sets...Henin is a better player I just wish she would smile a bit and show she is enjoying the game...

sure it wasnt super exciting, but thats because it was a match between an excellent player and one is could be really great but sometimes has trouble finding her rhythm venus/kuznetsova? i'd rather sharpen pencils all day in a dark room than watch that btw, justine does go to the net, and she does it beautifully

Kuznetsova is not a grey player, if you have seen her a few times you would know that she has so many weapons. She can come in with all guns blazing at the net or use her baseline weapons as well. Justine Henin's play is great, there is a lot of weapons she can use and so many people love to see her play. I agree with you on the fact that the final match didn't really get a lot of people going. When Henin started the second set against Serena then we saw the real no.1, Venus was the only person who could stop that, but she tried her best while fighting an unknow illness. All in all Henin's form was way too much for Kuznetsova to handle.

I think you don't even know how to spell Tennis. Not to downplay on Bartoli but it's simply the fact that Justine is much better tennis player and more entertaining to watch. If you don't like Federer, then it's fair to say you don't like Justine because the two are exactly the same - Just that one is female and the other is male. It's good though that you didn't wake up to watch the US open final match (if this is really true), why do we want an audience like you ?

The only thing I can wish you is : Have a good night, sleep well and try another job because your articles are really boring.

yeah i know some people think sarcasm means wit, but your article gives the worst type of sarcasm. how on earth justine's game can be boring? i agree the match wasnt as exciting as the one between justine and venus, but it wasn't justine's fault to be too good for Kuznetsova! And to help you be a better critic, please watch more matches of Kuzzy. She's great athleticism and a very powerful forehand. And Bartoli is no where near Justine in terms of tennis techniques. Of course, if it's interesting women that you want to see, then good night! Wish you a good sleep and a good dream with loads of interesting women other than some world-class tennis players.

Henin is a very good player, but "the female Federer?" no way! How can you put her talent in the same category as Federer?? She is a hard worker - He is pure magic!!

Last night's match was just as described. Henin bland, Kuz nonexistent. One more thing: Henin looked as if she cannot play without a fist after winning every point, and staring at her coach who is obliged to do back the same. What was Kuz's coach doing before the game? Absolute mystery. I missed Jelena Jankovic badly in this final. She fights, she runs, she has great shots, she smiles, all in all she looks like a human being on court. She reacts to players and the crowd, and is not showing her fist with a curse so much!
by Jan Alleman on September 09, 2007
Yes, Justine shows her fist almost after every winning point. Is it more disturbing than all those other nervous tics of Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and some others not to speak about those almost bestial shouts of Serena? Everybody reacts on a different way and this is simply human but, at least, Justine reacts AFTER the point, not before.

Watching a high level play of tennis should be entertaining in itself. I'm sorry you enjoy the sideshows of bartoli or whomever else might amuse you, but I watch because of the professionlism and good sportsmanship exhibited by the like of Justine Henin. I abhor those like the williams sisters who do not take responsibility for their defeats by "hinting" at injury and illness, or debasing by their opponent's victory by pronouncing that they won by luck, etc. I would not have tuned in if it had been an all williams final. How disgusting that would have been.

Good on you Justine my family from Australia all love you. A beauty is not in the face it;s in the heart and the way you are moving on the court we can feel all comes from your heart .......your are the most powerfull women on the tennis court...so the most beautifull as well.......tennis is sport it's a competition of the strongest and most powerfull bodies and minds and not dresses competition.........who want dresess .......there is no place for them in the tennis centre

The Williams sister's are the face of tennis. If they start playing more. woman tennis can be saved. I enjoy them playing this year in the us opening. They will be back to number 1 and 2 in the world, if they want it. Their dress code look fine to me.
