The year that was: Despite a disappointing end, Amelie Mauresmo finally took her first Grand Slam in Melbourne. But the real glory win came at Wimbledon, when she beat Justine Henin and her nerves. Her success propelled her to world No.1. She couldn’t make it happen at Roland Garros but she was on fire. She also took consecutive wins in Antwerp and Paris. Mauresmo was hitting with the best for years, but 2006 was her year. What happened in 2007: After a magical 2006, Mauresmo looked sharp for the new year. But a lack consistency and a frustrating appendix surgery has derailed the French star. Taking up her first-ever Grand Slam title defence in Melbourne was never going to be easy and the Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova did the damage, taking Mauresmo out in the fourth round. She scored big in Antwerp as she beat Kim Clijsters in the final and took home the notorious diamond-studded racket.
Mauresmo followed it up by being a finalist in Dubai but tragedy took hold when she needed an emergency appendix surgery. Her clay-court season was hit badly, but she somehow got to the final in Strasbourg. Safarova once again had the pleasure of putting out Mauresmo in another Grand Slam - the up-and- coming Czech sticking another nail in the coffin in the third round.
Mauresmo needed to boost her fan club’s confidence for Wimbledon. And she did just that, as she made the final on the gusty grass courts of Eastbourne. Nicole Vaidisova caused the next upset as she beat Mauresmo in the fourth round at Wimbledon - Amelie's distress was obvious in her interview. She also couldn’t pull her French squad in the Federation Cup. She took a long holiday explaining that she needed to regroup mentally. "For months I didn't touch my rackets, but I tried to keep up my physical training. I had quality time with my family and friends." Amelie's thoughts and expectations: Mauresmo now finds herself coming back in China, and is already looking forward to 2008, saying: "For me, 2007 is almost behind. I'll definitely play four or five tournaments and get ready to reach the top 10 again next year. My goal for next year will also include Grand Slams and the Olympic Games." For a lot of people she was always expected to eventually win a Slam, and she did just that. But, thinking about her nerves, some people also predicted a meltdown in 2007. Did expectations really cause the meltdown? I guess we will never know.
How does she match up? With the Williams sisters and Lindsay Davenport back on track, Henin and the Serbians following with consistency and brilliance, as well as the Russian talent, Mauresmo has a lot of competiton. I love to see Amelie's magic, but I always feel worried about her nerves and consistency. She will need to find her feet soon.

this is a welll written article which is cleary on point, except for the fact of people thinking amelie would win a major. i always thought sshe had the goods to win, but lacked mental strength and stabilty! yees, it was good to see her overcome her nerves on two occassions, but truth be told, she'll never win another major. on a positive note, this is a well written essay! kudos to the author, i love his work!

what a load of crap! Mauresmo didn't touch a damn racquet for weeks not months.Get your facts straight. Second of all,out of all the players you mentioned before, other than at the French, you forgot to say she went into Australia with a groin strain, she's had ALL year. She is the only player that can take out Henin, nobody else can do it. Consistency and brilliance from the Serbians? You have got to be kidding me Kenneeth! They get dusted by Henin at the French. Venus at Wimbledon and at the USO in either straight sets or after choking a match away. Davenport comes back after a year, and a bloody baby and takes Jankovic out.It really says how weak the current top 10 is if you take Henin,Sharapova,Venus and Serena. The rest is junk. The top 10 players are Henin,Sharapova,Mauresmo and the Williams sisters in no order.Make room for Davenport. The Petrova and Bartoli's are nothing but jokes. Kenneeth,if I were you U would keep quiet about Mauresmo not winning a major again, not only did she win 1 but she won 2;that's

Honeydoo you say that i have to get my facts right because the article says Amelie didn't touch a racket for months. Oh, why don't you say that to Amelie's face. Why?. Because she said it you foolish idiot. That is why we have quotation marks. Your other statements like Serbians have no consistency are also stupid. I'm sure other tennis fans can see my point about your thoughts about the top players.

although i feel that honeydoo has oversteped the buondaries of good taste, i believe he has a point about the serbians... although i like them, they cannot be called brilliant,, ivanovic is everything but consistent, and jankovic has an ever-growing tendency to squander already won matches, to choke in key points and to lose from top players... antoher point is that mauresmo and the rest of the squad mentioned have been top ten items for years, while the serbians have been ther for mere monts,, it doesn't seem fair to put them into the same waste basket....

Mauresmo is back and she will make it to the top 5 soon. Serbians have been here for few years and not months. Has Jankovic or Ivanovic defeated No.1 Henin ever? But Mauresmo did that when she defeated No.1 Davenport at AO'99. Not only that Mauresmo was the lowest ranked player(67) to defeat 3 top 10 players in 1998. Why cant the serbian do that?? And one more thing, Mauresmo is one player who can defeat Henin. Marion Bartoli reached the wimbledon final and she was not in top 10. Why didnt other top 10 players reach the final? For all those who underestimate Mauresmo, I have only one thing to say "She's Back!!"

i truly enjoyed wimbledon 2006 final. henin v mauresmo. though i was crushed when justine was defeated by amelie, i still respect amelie for the beauty of her game (if it was her day). yes, i think amelie can beat justine, but justine's still a better player. anyways, i hope 2008 will feature all-court players in the grand slam finals again
