When Agnes Szavay reached the New Haven final, it seemed we were looking at a potential champion of the future. But the Hungarian teenager wanted more as she pushed the boundaries by reaching the US Open quarter-finals. Now she has triumphant in Beijing, by far her biggest accomplishment.

Szavay met Jelena Jankovic in the prestigious Tier 2 tournament. Playing their first ever match didn’t affect Jankovic coming in as the favorite.

The Serbian sensation snapped Lindsay Davenport’s comeback and looked sharp to take her fifth title of the year. After some brilliant ball striking, the first set went to a tie break. Szavay looked sharp to take it at 5-0 but Jankovic rallied from behind to claim the first set 7-6 (9-7).

At 5-1 and match point down in the second set it all looked hopeless for Agnes Szavay. But the Hungarian was full of nothing but hope, as she amazingly soared past Jankovic with six straight games to claim the second set 7-5.

Despite Jankovic sustaining a neck problem, Szavay’s heroic comeback clearly points to a champion in the making. Szavay didn’t stop charging at Jankovic in the third set and she polished off the Serbian with a 6-7(7-9) 7-5 6-2 win. The Beijing showdown will definitely elevate Szavay’s name to new heights.

China’s local hero was in the form of Shuai Peng, the double handed sensation put a stop to Amelie Mauresmo’s comeback. Lindsay Davenport was continuing her surprise return as she was hoping to add to her Bali title. But Jankovic halted Davenport’s winning streak in the semi-final. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was forced to put forward a late withdrawal with an abdominal injury.

Szavay has claimed her second career title, be surely that there will be many more to come.
