Two years ago I turned on the TV in the mid-summer for a little Acura Classic action. My favorite WTA Tour tournament was in full swing, and the '05 resurgence of Mary Pierce was on full display. On this day, however, it was Kim Clijsters in the featured match, taking on a little-known Chinese player named Peng Shuai. Peng had been the shock of the tournament, beating Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina on her way to the quarter-finals, where she faced Clijsters. As the match began, I remember thinking what incredible power Peng had off both sides. She hit the ball with two hands both on her forehand and her backhand, making her strokes lethal when she was in position for them. A short backswing made for an evil more deadly pop when hit just right. 'The development of many sports throughout the country of China at the turn of the century was all done with one goal in mind: high performance for the 2008 Olympics'Peng wowed the San Diego locals that night. I was pretty impressed too: she had beaten Clijsters in straight sets in a year that the Belgium baseliner was at her best. Two years on, Peng Shuai sits one spot in the rankings behind her Acura Classic '05 spot: number 47. She is the second-highest ranked Chinese player behind Li Na, who is ranked 26. Yan Zi is the only other Chinese woman in the top 100 this week, however, sitting at a career high 72. So are we in the age of a Chinese dynasty or fluffery? That question is debatable, especially with the Beijing Olympics less than a year away. The development of many sports throughout the country of China at the turn of the century was all done with one goal in mind: high performance for the 2008 Olympics.

Yeah their top players can be a bit odd at times, with a mixed bag of results. I would say that Li Na was the best she has been struggling with injury recently but is China's best singles player. If it all goes wrong in the Olympics they won't throw all the tennis hype away, they have worked too hard for it. But a win their would propell tennis in China. I normally do articles on some tournaments and sometimes Chinesse players come out of the blue and go far, Toronta and Beijing are two examples. They will only get better.

I agree with what you said minus your last sentence: "They will only get better." I think the women have hit their peak. Li Na is starting to rebel, as is Peng Shuai when she formed a personal coaching relationship with Chang (though Chang is now working for the Chinese Tennis Fed.). I don't see much improvement for the Chinese women in the near future, at least not the way things have been going for them lately.

When i said they will only get better i really meant in number. You see in Toronto and Beijing these chinese players were anomalies, and i think these anomalies will only increase in numbers thus increasing the chance of more consistent players. Yeah i agree with the fact that China's campaign is very patchy and that's why i disagree with some of your stuff. They may be a bit low in terms of consistency right now but they are just in a wet patch. I haven't a clue when but i think a chinese player will soon arise and take full charge of the chinese campaign. By the way this is a great article, i really like reading them. Keep it up.

china has only recently started developing their tennis players sothey can have some good results and preperation for the olympics... considering the little time, they have done pretty well.... Li Na is a great player but her injury has ruled her out of tennis for sometime now but still remains in top30... Peng Shua is currenly in the top 50 and is only 20. shes a very talented player and this year has alreay managed some wins over top players such as patty schnyder SREBOTNIK, KATARINA martina hingis and amelie mauresmo... with maturity and experience i expect a rapid rise in ranking and results in the future
