The $650 000 Stuttgart Open tier-two tournament is holding some of the best performers next week. Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Amelie Mauresmo, Anna Chakvetadze, Elena Dementieva, Martina Hingis and defending champion Nadia Petrova are all playing. Justine Henin leads the pack: The number one seed is Belgian’s pride and joy, Coming off her unbeaten North American campaign which saw her win titles in Toronto and New York, this year has arguably been her best as she has collected an amazing seven titles and still remains on the hunt for more. The year has also seen her get over a frustrating divorce and she is reunited with her family. Justine will be making her debut in Stuttgart and she will want to start it off in style. But as many other Grand Slam winners, Justine now faces the challenging question, can she continue the winning form? Serena struggling on comeback: The thumb injury sustained at Wimbledon ruled out Serena Williams from her US Open warm-up events. She didn’t look at her best in Flushing Meadows but she stated that she was improving every round. Henin took the American out in the quarter-final and we have yet to see Serena in action since. But Serena is all about heroic comebacks and be sure to see one heck of a fight come next week. Serena will also be making her debut in Stuttgart. A year that has seen her come through the Australian Open despite the humiliating odds has reminded everyone to never underestimate Serena Williams. There is no real guarantee how the tournament will pan out for her, but one thing we do know is that Serena will turn up with a champion’s belief. 'This year has arguably been Henin's best as she has collected an amazing seven titles' Svetlana Kuznetsova showing off: Delight for the Russian as she is finally strutting her stuff at No.2. Reaching the US Open final for the second time has been her highlight of the year, as well as capturing her ninth career title in New Haven. She has also reached four other finals this year, three of them being in the tier one calibre. She gained one of the most competitive and hardest titles around as the No.1 Russian. Her lethal play pitches her as a big threat in Stuttgart. Her best performances here are two semi-final appearances, last year she lost to eventual champion Nadia Petrova in the final four stage. The Russian is more than capable of taking a tier two title but given the way Justine beat her in the US Open final, can she overcome the Belgian? Tough life for the defending champion: Petrova has yet to take a title since prevailing in Paris earlier this year. Remember, she came in to the 2006 French Open as the heavy favourite, but injury derailed all her chances.
The Serbian sensations in the form of Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic are also in the tournament and come off a great run of form Also flying the flag of Russia with Kuznetsova and Petrova is Anna Chakvetadze, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina. Maria Sharapova has pulled out with injury, Amelie Mauresmo continues her return, Marion Bartoli is also hoping for more glory and Tatiana Golovin wants to add to her second title she pulled off recently. Switzerland’s Martina Hingis and Patty Schnyder are pitching well and Daniela Hantuchova is also topping the field coming in.

PERSONALLY I JUST CANT SEE SERENA LOSING 4 TIMES IN A ROW TO ANY PLAYER... YEA OK I THOUGHT JUSTINE WOULD GET HER @$$ HANDED TO HER AT WIMBLEDON AND HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR HER THUMB INJURY I BELIEVE SHE WOULD HAVE WON THAT QUARTER-FINAL MATCH!!! IM GOING OUT ON A LIMB AND WILL FOLLOW MY HEART INSTEAD OF MY GUT AND PICK SERENA TO WIN THE TOURNAMENT, BEATING HENIN IN 3 TOOGH SETS!!!!
by Moz on September 29, 2007

ok lets al be honest ms williams is da best and she knows dat dis is her tournament cuz everytime henin beat her she wuzn at her best. we all know dat at her best no one except venus can crack her.lets not 4get how she tore through da miami field impressively.damn but revenge is sweet aint it

in my opinion serena hasn't got the game anymore to defeat justine...it's most likely justine who will be victorous in stuttgart, she just plays too consistent and too well
by Justin on September 29, 2007
Its all about how Serena decides to play. If she is at 100%, she will win easy. If she is hurt or just slugging aroung like at the french earlier this year, its Justine in straight sets. Im for Serena!!

I'm for Serena, too. But if Justine plays at 100%, I think she's better than a 100% Serena at this point. There is no intimidation factor for Henin against Serena and her three wins against her in the Slams this year only gives her more confidence.
by jj on September 30, 2007
Obviously serena doesn't need to be at 100% in order to win. she wasn't at the australian open and won. and while i think it's lame to make excuses for losing, she almost beat justine with the injured thumb at wimbledon. I just think it's going to come down to, will serena commit to winning and keep that commitment throught the whole tournament. I hope she does win, cuz when she dominates, its fun to watch.

Make no mistake, I want to see Serena win. But in order to do that, she must play like a No.1 player because that is how Justine is playing. Serena needs to be inspired like she was at Australia- even though Justine wasn't there, I do not think that she would've have taken Serena then. She has to go for broke with Justine because Justine will. But I credit Justine and her dedication to the game- she deserves to be winning because she is inarguably the most dedicated player on the WTA.

I have to agree that I doubt she'll lose 4 times in a row to any one player but underneath I'm abit worried that Henin is, dare I say it, better?! Come on Serena though!!!
by Jaglo on October 01, 2007
I think that if Serena decided to play in Stuttgart then she would not dare lose a 4th time to Justine. I can recall when Sharapova beat Serena on several occasions and Serena returned to prove herself that she could beat Sharapova. I am certain that Serena can beat Justine e.g. Miami. She has proven that when she does dedicate herself.....she can win! Will she win? Yes, if she can control herself mentally and minimize the unforced errors. Go Serena!

no way serena can beat henin..Henin is gonna make lots of lucky shots this time too:-)
by Dapo Osewa on October 01, 2007
committment! I repeat committment. Venus has gone to Kore just after the US open and played well enough to win. What's Serena been doing ? Enjoying her time in front of paparazi. I am a Serena fan, much for the colour and drama she brings to the game, but to be realist means to accept that for Serena to beat Justine, she's got to do a lot more than throwing power shots. There is too much precision about Justine's swings @ the mo, and I fear Serena just isn't into tennis that much. I won't place my bet on a Serena win over Justine yet, but I pray to high heavens they only meet at the final!

I'm sorry to burst the bubbles of all you Serena fans, but i can't see Serena taking out Justine Henin any time soon. Justine is just playing too well right now. If Williams were to play Henin in this tournament, she'd go out thee with an inclination to bash the crap out of the ball. That is hardly a smart game plan. I think that Henin was got inside Serena's head since Roland Garros, and while playing a high standard of tennis against Williams, she is also psyching Serena, which is causing her to skizt out. This is better phrased as 'lose her cool'. I'm hoping for a Henin-Kuznetsova duel in the final which Kuznetsova wins in the end in an act of revenge for the u.s open final. GO KUZNETSOVA!

Justine will win as usuall Go JuJu, kick their butt$!!
by daniel Francis on October 01, 2007
Sorry serena fans. Serena doesn't just show up on the court and decide if she is gonna win or lose today. She wants to win every match, just like everyone else. This being said, she is not in the shape, form or mentality to win like she used to. Justin on the other hand is clearly the best player in the world right now, and has proved many times this year that she has what it takes to beat anyone...include either Williams...and at 100%. It's funny how everytime serena loses it's because she played bad or that she is not 100%, or that the other girl made a lot of "lucky shots". Sounds like a sore loser to me, and I hope she gets blown away by Justine!

alrite when serena first played sharapova in miami in 2004 she didnt really know about her and just played her game, but after sharapova beat her at wimbledon she got kinda shell-shocked, she couldnt quite play HER GAME. Believe it or not she had a fear factoer with sharapova, but after that australian semi in 05 she hasnt looked back since. Its the same for henin.. When they played in miami they hadnt played in a while so it was like just another match, but after the next three grandslams serena got weary and nervous about playin justine, she knows she has the game to take out any player in striat sets, but talent alone wont do it. Justine is no longer scared of the williams' and proved it. now they have to show they are still the best the game has ever had and commit.. i like how venus is playing smaller tournaments and stacking points and titles and along the way confidence.. now if serena can do well and qualify for madrid the season ending championship will be the TOURNAMENT TO REMEMBER!!!
by Chris on October 02, 2007
I do agree that Serena is the sort of the player that needs to be psyched hard enough to win. Remember how she lost to 'Siren' Sharapova in 04's Wimbledon and Masters? She turned it around in 05's Aussie's Open and henceforth whipped her left, right, centre in recent tournaments. No doubt that Justine has beaten her 3 times in a row. The psyched Serena will have the better of her this time round, simply because Serena has too much ego at stake not to make it 4 straight losses in a row. Honestly, there has not been any player in the WTA Tour who is able to beat Serena (not even Venus) 4 times in a row! Hence, keep ur fingers crossed that Serena will prevail this time around!
by Jon on October 05, 2007
Just seen Serena get her comeuppance at the hands of Kuznetsova. maybe she will finally accept that she is no longer the best, and stop making lame and spiteful excuses when she loses.
by jaglo on October 07, 2007
I think that Serena is having some off the court problems that she is not revealing. Of course, I am not taking any credit away from Justine because it is very eminent that she is the most consistent player in WTA. In saying this, I cannot see Serena surrendering. She will prevail and redeem herself very soon. She is one of those players who has to be up for the mental challenge. If she is not mentally prepared, then even some of the lower ranked players can possibly beat her. Overall, I know that she will be back!
by Sandra on October 09, 2007
Ha! Ha! Ha! Serena gets knocked out of another tournament that Justine wins. This time she didn't even get to play Justine. ROFL. She gets knocked out by Sveta who has a 2-152 H2H against Justine and Sveta says herself that Justine is Sveta's hardest challenge. Serena better than Justine - hell NO!! Serena is fat and finished! LOL @ the Serena fans thinking she'll ever beat Justine again. Serena is ALL talk and no do! ROFL!!! Bye, bye, Serena, bye, bye! :-)
by Eric Capacia on October 11, 2007
Serena is going down the drain. Simply because power play not compensated by brain and tactics is a thing of the past. True that the Williamses capitalized on the power game that brought them so much in their careers, however, the new age has brought this type of game a notch higher - that is power plus brian. It's like saying Martina Hingis and Andy Roddick combined talent.
by Matt on October 13, 2007
Sorry, but you attempts to bring Henin down is bordering on pathetic here. Every post about women's tennis includes a "When will Serena break Justine" thory or hope. I'm surprise there's space on the internet for your garbage. Stick to the Serena fan club pages for useless tripe cheerleading posting.
by Dan Meara on October 29, 2007
The best possible outcome for Serena was that she didn't have to go up against Justine again. After all, even Serena must be running out of excuses for repeated losses to the player who outclasses her in every concievable way
