Before an impressive seven Grand Slam titles, preceding the all-Belgian rivalries with Kim Clijsters, and quite a few years before dominating the game, Justine Henin sat as a child in the stands of the French Open with her mother. Knowing what was ahead would have certainly been too much for any child to take in, yet the question remains - has this champion been overshadowed by a Swiss named Roger?

Although it may seem to some like a faint memory, there was a time when Mr. Federer was simply another possible contender for the title. Today, it is commonplace to find his name juxtaposed between the words 'flawless' and 'the best ever'. Perhaps the only person who has a right to be upset with his success is the person holding firm to the women's top spot. Even at Roland Garros, where Henin reigns supreme, the big story is focused on whether or not Federer will capture the only major title that alludes him.

Henin's life has not been free from controversy. The infamous 'hand incident' in the semis of the French Open in 2003 against Serena Williams, as well as her retiring in the 2006 Australian Open final against Amelie Mauresmo due to an upset stomach, have caused fans to question her honesty. A long estrangement from her father and a difficult divorce from her husband brought the Belgian attention, although not the kind an athlete seeks.

'Justine has proved she has what it takes to make it to the top with consistently impressive results'

Nevertheless, it is hard not to root for the petite yet powerful slugger. Once thought to be a physically weak player in comparison to most of the highly-ranked players, Justine has proved she has what it takes to make it to the top with consistently impressive results. As the end of another tennis season approaches, she stands at least 2000 points ahead of the rest and has an outstanding record of 58-4.

Perhaps Mr. Federer will take notice…and so should we.
