With the season drawing to a close, it's time to look back upon the tennis year and reflect. How good a year was it? Well, for five people in particular it was a very good year - most notably Justine Henin and Roger Federer, who between them took home five Grand Slams.
It also wasn't half bad for the Williams sisters, whom we saw dominate both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Also a certain Mr Nadal proved to be the King of Clay for a third consecutive year, with another great victory in Paris.
But while the above players dominated the Grand Slams, it was also a good year for players such as Fernando Gonzalez, who reached his first Grand Slam final in Australia, although his year has seemed to deteriorate since then.
Other impressive moves on the men's tour came from young Novak Djokovic, who also made his Grand Slam final debut in New York. That's not to mention his semi-final appearances at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. However, his most impressive victory came at the Canada Masters, where he defeated Rafa in the semis and Fed in the finals.
On the women's side we saw Grand Slam final debutantes Ana Ivanovic in Paris, and most shockingly Marion Bartoli at Wimbledon. Svetlana Kuznetsova also returned to the GS final scene when she lost to Henin at Flushing Meadows.
But while there is a rise, there is also a fall. Maria Sharapova started the year fabulously by making the finals of the Australian Open at the beginning of the year. Her devastating defeat to Serena Williams in the final, together with a string of recurring injuries, resulted in early-round exits at both Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows. Despite winning two Grand Slams last year, the momentum was not with Amelie Mauresmo this year, either.
So how does this year fare in comparison to 2006? On the women's side, its great to see Justine playing so well, and also brilliant to see the Williams sisters back into the top 10. Even with the newer players making the rise, Sharapova and Mauresmo's absence is sorely missed.
The men's side hasn't changed much since last year. We are still waiting for Rafa to fully break through on the other surfaces are really tackle Federer on the other surfaces.
All in all it was a good year; next year we look forward to maybe the likes of Ivanovic, Jankovic and Djokovic taking the next leap and challenging their predecessors in the majors. Also we can look forward to the returns of Sharapova and Mauresmo to really shake things up in the women's game.

it's funny how you mention how much Sharapova has been injured all year but failed to mention Mauresmo's appendix surgery that kept her out of the game for almost 3 months and that year long groin injury she's carried! Mauresmo is the only player, other than on clay capable of taking Henin out.the rest of the WTA aren't technically complete like Mauresmo is and isn't affraid of Henin, ask Jankovic!Henin said that Mauresmo is THE player that gives her the most trouble, check the USO site;her interview with Justin Gimelstob for proof. Bias I think so. You should work for Bill O'Reilly McNamara

the serbians will become a bigger force in 2008, just watch. both ivanovic and djokovic have each been to a grand slam final and are ready to win one now that they got all their nervous tendencies of making it to the finals out of their way. and it's just a matter of time for jankovic to make a final. and i seriously hope that sharapova makes a comeback.

Juju-Justine Henin is going to rule the French again, hopefully. She will try to compete in Wimbledon and hopefully win another medal in the Olympics.Ivanovic is coming up and can become a force as well as Golovin who saw two straight finals but downed by the supreme Henin. Novak is going to be a force if he's healthier even in the upcoming masters and will be better in the hardcourt season next year. Rafa if he's healthy can dominate RolandG unless Fed gets a better footing on clay. Venus is supreme on grass and if Henin can beat her as she did finally on hardc. she can have a chance but it looks like Venus's to lose. Vaidisova can become better as we have seen her in semis and beat Venus. Serena will be weak and complain about her "injuries" and lucky shots by the #1 Henin. Lastly, sorry I haven't done many comments, it's Federer's matches to lose if he shows up anywhere other than clay.

yeah, i do think that classy french butch, mauresmo is probably the only player who could really beat henin in g.slam final, but i still think henin is a better player as she is more consistent than mauresmo. i hope next year henin and mauresmo would rule the g.slams. just love these one-handed backhand players and they both got all-court game.

Undoubtdely mah favorite player besides Serena and Venus is Tatiana Golovin. And she is having a phenomenal end to this season. Pushing Justine Henin to the Max twice in two finals and i expect her to continue her amazing tennis next year. Heres my next year's end top 10( injury free) 1) Venus 2)Serena 3)Justine 4) Sharapova 5) Davenport 6) Golovin 7) Ivanovic 8) Hantuchvoa 9) Vadisova 10) Jelena Jankovic Do you disagree??

I like that you put Davenport at 5-Vaidisova in the mix and to save typing the last 5. I don't know about the rankings per se but the bottom half injury free I would put Justine above Serena and maybe above Venus-maybe. Can everybody tell I like JuJu? If Venus can win Wimbledon again like I think she can dominate just as Fed has with more Tier 1 wins she has a chance but Henin is the better player now...Right y'all?

I hope Justine Henin would continue to dominate in 2008 although Jankovic is getting better and better.

Mauresmo will definitely have a good year. I hope she recovers fully from her injuries.

Sorry for not mentioning Amelie's op, it was not intentional, Mauresmo is one of my favorite players...She is a great player and sorely missed from her fans...Lets hope she will recover soon
