Well some players have really bad days. serenaQFhe french this year. A real mad performance, that even she admitted to. Yeah maybe Novak was tired or something, but i dont think he should be fined. I didnt watch the match but Novak shouldn't be fined. Because it wasn't obvious that novak wasn't trying, even if he wasn't. But if he got fined there would be a lot of doubt within the atp tour.

Hi Aasim, I agree with you that he shouldn't be fined. My point is that you can't start fining people for not playing hard as a response to players throwing matches because then you'd be handing out a lot of fines. If you want to deal with players throwing matches, you have to find out who is paying the players to affect the outcome of matches. To do that, you have to go after the bettors. In that case, then, you have a solid case against the players, not a judgement call.

I think it`s simply unfair of you to write an article like this considering it was Djokovic`s 84th match of the season, the highest number of all the players this year. So how many of the 84 matches he didn`t care? Should he get a bonus for sometimes caring too much? What about Nadal should he get fined for not caring when he played Nalbandian or Ljubicic who loses in first rounds regularily ? Should they be fined every time they lose a match? Or we should just realize they are not machines, they have feelings and sometimes dont feel well..

Hi Unfair, That is my point. How are you going to fine players for not trying? I'm saying that the ATP is fining Davydenko because they're trying to prevent players from tanking matches and that will not work. It's a judgment call. If they want to prevent match fixing, they will have to go after the gamblers who benefit from match fixing and that is a lot harder to do.

You are absolutely right. They should try to find ways to protect players not go after them like this. And they are making players play so many matches they have to tank sometimes so they wouldn`t get injured or too exhausted for majors. The reason top three players were playing Paris is this:As well as securing the end of season No. 1 slot, Federer is also in line to secure a $1.5m payout from the ATP Masters Series Bonus Pool. The $3 million ATP Masters Series Bonus Pool pays $1.5m, $750,000, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively to the world's top four players in the year-end ATP Race standings (released after Tennis Masters Cup) provided they have played eight of the season's nine ATP Masters Series tournaments, including Madrid and Paris.

Hi Veka, Thanks for the info about the Masters Series Bonus Pool. $1.5 million is a lotta money to turn down. I guess the ATP was sick of players skipping Paris. It's they're fault, though, for having two Masters Series events so close to each other at the end of the year. Who wants to play Paris and take the chance of injuring yourself just before Shanghai. I hear that Andy Roddick is considering skipping Shanghai to avoid getting injured and, instead, is focusing on Davis Cup. If so, that has to be the first time someone has done that. I can't imagine the ATP will let him do it.
