The final showdown of the year featured defending champion Justine Henin against Maria Sharapova, who was saving a disastrous season. It was one for the record books with high expectations. Straight from the start, the pressure was on. The first strike dictated the rest of the points as both players came out with all guns blazing. It was Justine who got the first break, only to be broken back by a determined Maria. The brilliant and consistent display of deep and aggressive hitting cracked down to a 6-5 lead to Sharapova. But Henin wasn’t going to give Maria the first set easily as the high-pitched Russian endured 10 deuces and finally converted on her eight set points to wrap up a tightly-contested first-set 7-5. With a great start, Maria was advised to start serving out wide more. But Justine came back, and with a few breaks served out the second set to love and take it 7-5. 'Straight from the start, the pressure was on. The first strike dictated the rest of the points, as both players came out with all guns blazing'Maria started feeling the heavy duty her body had endured and needed the trainer at 2-3 down. Taking some nasal spray seemed to rebut Sharapova’s body and she broke back to level at 3-3. But Henin was determined to recapture and maintain her lead and broke back. Sharapova now served to stay in the match at 3-5 down. Despite the Russian’s more fierce and consistent serving, Justine closed out the match on her fifth championship point. A well-deserved 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory to end a memorable season.
“It was a tough last game,” Henin admitted. "We were both dead, but what a way to finish the season. It is a dream what has happened to me this season. I have learned a lot of things this year. I have enjoyed my tennis - but it has been emotional.”
Sharapova said. “It's been a difficult year, with a lot of injuries. Two weeks ago I didn't know if I was going to play here and so to get to the final is a surprise.”
Other players making a big impression in Madrid were Ana Ivanovic and Anna Chakvetadze. Although Chakvetadze had a lot of help along the way, the Russian got to the semi-final. The Serbian sensation played stunning tennis and it took the eventual champion to kick her out of Madrid as she voyaged to the semi-final. Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic displayed strength but injuries and illness took their toll.
Svetlana Kuznetsova was a real disappointment; she left her rare and strong talents in the locker room. Daniela Hantuchova was a bit slow but had a good time.

I think the finale was a fitting end to the year as it was of extreme high quality. I was really surprised by Maria's determination and fitness level, as well as her really classy speech after the game. Justine ends a brilliant year in style, winning and topping her previous record of 24 in a row, being the first woman earning more then 5 mil.dollars in one year and staying undefeated in the second half o/t year(last person who did it was Graf). Justine = world sport athlete o/t year in my book. I hope Maria will stay injury free so we can see many more great duels between these excellent athletes. Ana, Jelena, Daniella : please be present also in the new year, and I hope Venus will be ready too. And Serena: well we'll see. It's now or never for her.

haha! i knew that lil' belgian's gonna win madrid. toldya can forget about aerena. anyhoos i wasn't fully satisfied with justine's serves. she should have won this straight sets if not for her numerous double faults. but she's a true champion and she finally showed maria who is the better player

Your title is unappropriate. Saying that she's been outclassed by Henin is degrading to Sharapova. Both of them played top level tennis and it was certainly one of the best, if not the best match of the year. What a way to end it! You should change it to "outlasted" instead. Henin and Sharapova both played at equally very high levels. Justine just edged her out this time since Justine seemed to be fitter. Maria's a big player and obviously in the 3rd set, she was too tired to continue. But kudos to Henin and Sharapova as well for giving us, the audience, something magical to watch. Cheers to them! Finally a fight worth watching. The round robin and semifinal matches were too one-sided. Justine thrashed everyone in the red group and Ana Ivanovic while Maria took a bit more time, but still crushed everyone in the yellow group and demolished Anna and Ana.
When I was watching the match live, I keep on forgetting the fact that there's a 5 year age difference between the two players. Seems like Justine's experience helped her take control of the match in the latter part of the second set when Sharapova started to show signs of tiredness. Three or four years from now, Sharapova, Ivanovic, and co. will be the new Henins, Williamses, and other tennis greats of recent memory and they'll encounter newer players like the Sharapova, Ivanovic and co. of now. Good luck to Henin for being the last of yesteryear's champions remaining. I still can't discount the possibility of Davenport and the Williamses making a full comeback next year, but we'll see.

I think Sharapova's speech at the end of the match was really great...Its great to see someone who is extremly gracious in defeat. It shows how much respect she has for Justine...I think it would have been wrong if Justine hadn't won. After the year she had, this had to be the iceing on the cake!

Saying that Henin is the last of yesterday 's champion is deeply wrong ! An active champion is from today ! Expectations are suppositions, and comparison whith the past is just speculation. Justine is a warrior...and as long as she feels it, she'll keep on .. 5 years' difference ? ok ! that's right ! But what are the result of Maria against the Williams ?? not quite good ! Althougt they are of the same size, hitting fiercely the balls ! But even if Maria has a good mind, and better technically than the Williams(less direct fout),they are under the skills of Henin..She is the only one to own all the technic of tennis, the variety of hittings is impressive..compare their heights..1m67 to 1m85 for Maria (if I am correct)..and with a very medium serve..it gives that Henin hasn't finished to progress as well.. So the yesterday champion will make the past lasting fo long...even if I am delighted to hav seen at least someone able to compete with Juju...and it is welcoming for next year ! But Justine isn't Clijs

She is part of yesteryear's champions. She is in the same age group as the 'active' or 'semi-active' champions such as the Williamses. And BTW, Martina Hingis will ALWAYS be techically better everyone else. And oh, haven't you seen Venus play. She's got the skills to match Justine. An in-form Venus Williams can thrash any player, including Justine. I'm 100% sure that Maria's cooking up a storm for 2008. Henin better be prepared.

an in-form 100% venus williams got beat by a 100% justine at the USO if you're gonna mention the dizziness issues, remember justine was having breathing problems
by MH on November 14, 2007
Venus Williams wasn't in-form during the U.S. Open you motherfucking dimmwit!!! Venus > Justine. Just look at their records. And BTW, a fully in-form Maria can take down an in-form Justine any day. Maria had a minor respiratory problem via cold during the Year-End WTA Championships.

I think next year will be very interesting with Sharapova,Henin and also Venus Williams one or two of the new girls(thinking of both Anna's). I don't think records or stats against any player means a lot, what was in the past doesn't count for these days. Injuries will play a pert in the next season, and for any pro tennis women this advice : determination. Williams sisters need to make up their minds : are they going full time for it or not ? I hope they do, it would only make tennis games even more competitive.
the records were meant to underline the 3 defining moments in modern women's tennis. 1999-2002 saw the rise of the Williams sisters and the silent and humble beginnings of Justine Henin, whose undeniable talent eventually catapulted her into prominence in 2003. Owing to injuries, however, a brief interim ensued to usher in the Russians. 2005 marked the fulfillment of Clijsters' destiny while 2006 marked the fulfillment of Mauresmo's. 2007 saw the crowning of Henin as the undisputed queen as all her handmaids stood with heads bowed before her. Henin is Graf reborn.

I agree that at the US Open in that first set with Justine against Venus, it was the two at the very top of the their form...I don't think they were both playing 100% but both were playing at the same level and Justine came through!...I think that Justine is all in all the BEST player in the world right now, and that is including fully fit William sisters. I think Sharapova has really learn't from her Aussie Open final and has learn't to defend, so hopefully she can continue forward and bring that style to next year, who knows what can happen?
by Louise is right on November 15, 2007
you're right louise and hmmmm... justine is the dominator in tennis right now, thing is williams fans can't accept it judging from MH's reaction, he knows justine is the better player since he got so "offending and insulted" from my commment i know what the records are, 7-2 your point? venus won those 7 times before about 4 years ago they were both at their best during the USO
by MH is wrong on November 15, 2007
i know maria had a cold, your point again? justine had a sore foot after she beat ana ivanovic it was the end of the season, everyone is tired, sick etc, you just got to deal with it and no, a fully in-form maria can't beat a fully in-form justine, justine has proven this i think 6 or 7 times already, especially in the YEC

Ree should not be allowed to post such absurd statements. This is an open forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion. So, what if someone is a fan of the Williams', Justine, Sharapova, or whomever. It is their choice and it is ridiculous for you to make such stupid racist comments. Sportingo should not allow this on the website, it is total stupidity and makes no sense for such derogative behavior!
by steven on November 15, 2007
While I agree with your PoV and your statement against racism, (it shouldn't happen-nowhere), again there's some subjective mix in your posting. When someone posts"STFU asshole,etc.." it is not always abnormal you get an even worse response(unfortunately) Perhaps it's best to delete both specific postings then, but I personally find it offensive you disprove(and righteously so) on racism, but don't condamn the namecalling from a Serena fan. Very manipulative in my eyes, sorry. They are both great champions, let's hope they duel again and give the tennis world and their viewers a lot of excitement. As from who's the bigger champion : in the eyes of Justine's fans that will be JH, in the eyes of Serena it will be Serena. Both can bring facts worthwile considering. Let them fight it out on the field.
by Jaglo on November 15, 2007
Steven, thanks for being the mediator but my POV had nothing to do with Serena. It was against racist name calling such as "nigga". The forum should not even allow name calling, whether it is "asshole" or whatever.Yes, I am a Williams fan and no one will ever change my opinion. I am not trying to change anyone else's if they choose Justine over Serena or whomever, that is their business. Let me reiterate, if you are in agreement with the name calling, then that is your business as well but I do not agree with it. I am intelligent enough to realize that everyone is not a Venus/Serena fan and I truly do not care if they are or not. I just know that I am a fan of theirs; I do not condemn others for not being a fan of the Williams', I condemn the name bashing, particulary "nigga".
by amen on November 17, 2007
justine fans will always side with justine and serena fans will always side with serena problem is when people start bashing the opposition pretty stupid if you ask me...
by tennis on November 21, 2007
i am a fan of justine henin, and i truly believe she's a better player than serena or venus now (because of her all-court and near-federer game). but i didn't think justine outclasses maria in the final. justine was a bit off and she was struggling with her serves during the 1st set and had to dig deeper in the 2nd set. i applaud maria for pushing justine to the limit and for that speech. hopefully, these 2 women will give us more memorable matches in the future
