As much as it pained Martina Hingis to lose, she couldn't help but do so sometimes. Especially late in her career(s), losing was something that came along with her game. The problem for Hingis, however, was that her mission statement was too short, too simple. The abridged version read something like this: "Win tennis matches." Hingis' statement is similar to many top-tier players. Actually, it would be hard to find a tennis player at any level that didn't have "winning" somewhere in their mission statement. For the most part, that word would land in sentence one or two, as the foremost goal of a player. The important part of any mission statement – whether it’s for a corporation, non-profit organisation, stay-at-home mum or professional athlete – isn't about the end goal, but the process it takes to reach that goal. How, exactly, are you going to reach this stated goal? How are you going to achieve your mission? βThe point is, unless there is context behind a great player, they no longer will be able to find success like great champions once did.βIf you were to read the unabridged version of Hingis' game, it might go like this: "Win tennis matches by out-thinking opponents." OK, that's a little better, but still, where is the fuel that feeds the fire? Let's take the current No.1 in men's tennis. Roger Federer's mission statement might read: "Win tennis matches by out-thinking opponents with the use of tactical slice, a powerful serve, cat-like movement and defence that looks like offence. Achieve this by surrounding myself with positive, confident people who boost my morale, but also keep me grounded. Train under a regimented schedule that challenges both my tennis game and my physique, especially focusing on long-term conditioning." Federer's mission statement is obviously more detailed and more goal-oriented. The problem with Hingis throughout her career was that she stuck to her simple mission statement, instead of being willing to change it up with an off-court conditioning programme or a beefy serve.

If Hingis had matured to be a couple or three inches taller, she probably would have beefed up her serve, as she would have had the angle to use the extra power. She never had the grim determination of Henin, who has overcome the problems due to her lack of height. But still, when on top form, few (if any) tennis players have been so wonderful to watch. Fewer still appeared to enjoy themselves as much as Hingis. The current women's game is a pretty ugly thing by comparison, as a generation of hard-eyed percentage players are taught to hit as hard as possible and never, ever go anywhere near the net 'til the and of the match.

Hingis is still under investigation for use of cocaine.I'm tempted to say that maybe it was for recreational use because if she really thinks cocaine would have helped her win, then she should go back to her supplier because she didn't win a damn thing if and when she may have used the cocaine and ask for a REFUND!

The sport changed on Hingis to a power game. She was hardly ready for it.

I think its unfair to knock Hingis when she's out, she was a great player who will be well remembered not only for her tennis smarts and tactics amidst a power game but for her endearing/sometimes volatile personality as well, unlike henin who has zero. you probably should not try to assume her 'statement', she was a crafty player who would have a well-thought out statement and to comeback the way she did she would have had to put a LOT of work in. I think that all the players now try to have more than a one-dimensional game, they realise they have to be better than the rest. henin's coach is always (illegally) telling her to move forward, forward, forward. and although the Williams sisters are renowned for bringing the power game to the forefront in women's tennis, they arguably have the most complete games around. Venus Serena are the only top players with the guts to come to the net often (and always state how important this is to their game) they also know the significance of shot variation which bo

JD, I think you make good points, but I would have to disagree. Hingis herself admitted that she hated off-court training both in her first go-around on the tour and during her comeback. She also knew that beefing up her serve would help her win some quick points, but never steered away from her mother for advice. To say that Henin lacks a personality is unfair, as well. Sure, she is quiet, but the media has been unfair to her just because she is such an intense champion. If you read her press conference transcripts there is great stuff in there. Just because she isn't calling other players names and being a diva doesn't take away from her personality.

JD, are you blind? who says the williams have the most complete games around? Justine and amelie are the only current all-court (complete) players. serena just hits hard and runs after the ball, venus is a better player compared to serena but the williams still lack all-court play like henin and mauresmo. it's so obvious you're a sista's fan

both the williams sisters (venus more usually) and henin and mauresmo come to the net.. they are all complete..henin's forehand used to be a weakness , but she has improved it amazingly now..mauresmo's forehand will always be a weakness so i guess the other 3 are more complete without any weaknesses in their game..
