Just cannot believe that ATP is so dumb. I thought that the league rules setback will prevent ATP from introducing any more stupid rules. But this rule is really as bad as it can get.

If the ATP, as with most every first-world business, has in place Occupational Health and Safety rules to protect their employees then they cannot ethically or legally force the players, who are all constituent members of the ATP, to participate in activities which endanger their wellbeing.

Unfortunately the author of this article has gotten a few facts confused. First of all the ATP governs the men’s tour only – it may be they are thinking of ITF rules for Futures tournaments. Nevertheless, the ATP rules are pretty clear on this and apply to ATP Tour doubles matches only. Basically, if a team withdraws or retires they get points and prize money from previous rounds unless: Neither player was in the singles draw; One of the team members was in the singles event and had to retire or withdraw from that match; or he was forced to withdraw from the following week’s event. Players still receive points and prize money, minus one round. For example, if a team withdrew from a semi-final match they would receive quarter-final points and money. It’s a rule that was instigated at Tour level in 2005 and applies only to doubles matches.
