With the 2008 tennis season approaching, fans across the globe will be anticipating another high calibre year. This will be a year to remember, as it will be filled with high intensity action from the likes of Venus Williams, Justine Henin, Serena Williams, and comeback queen Lindsay Davenport. Aside from the players defining the year, fresh events, the Olympics and a crop of new teenage athletes will help the new season be nothing short of extraordinary. One of the biggest changes the tour will see is the addition of two new stops across the globe. In February players will have the option to head to the South American city of Viña del Mar. But in the second half of the season the tour will head to Doha, Qatar, for the prestigious season-ending Championships.
This is one of the reasons the Sony Ericsson tour is considered to be constantly growing and expanding across the world. Two notable absentees will be Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters. When the Belgian girl said she would retire in 2007, no one took the rumour seriously. But she has married and is now pregnant, so it seems that she is starting a new chapter in her life.
But will she be like Lindsay Davenport and make a comeback after motherhood? Most likely, yes. As for Hingis, she left the tour again after being accused of taking drugs. But how could she use a drug and take to the court? It's virtually impossible because of the reactions the drug would cause. She wouldn’t be able to chase down balls, let alone score points. Now the tour will be left without the friendly Clijsters, who could do the splits off any shot and still track down another ball, and the brilliant Hingis, who wooed the world in her teenage years.
Tennis fanatics across the world always look forward to the four Grand Slams. This year should be no different, and you have to wonder who will dominate them and who will crumble under the pressure. in Perth this week, Serena Williams has already shown she is ready to defend her Australian Open title. But you can never count out her sister Venus or Justine Henin.
On the Parisian red clay, Henin will be a favourite to make the final for the fourth year in a row. She will still dominate through the draw, probably winning in straight sets until the final, where she will encounter one of the Williams sisters. But this could be the year that Venus wins the Grand Slam she lost to her sister earlier in her career.
Serena will be one to watch out for, though, at the All England Club. This is the best chance for an all-Williams Final, but because of an intense first half of the year, Venus will fall short in her Wimbledon defence and will hand the Venus Rosewater Dish over to her little sister. As for the US Open, Serena will continue to perform strong and will ease into the final, regardless of whether Henin is in her path or not. Venus and Serena will both show the tennis world that they are forces to reckon with.
Once again Venus, Serena and Henin will be the main contenders for an Olympic medal in Beijing. But look out for Jelena Jankovic to make a big run, even possibly taking a medal in the end. Serena will take gold though, Henin silver, and a toss up for bronze between both Jankovic and Venus Williams. The Williams girls will be hot for the doubles title, but watch out for a spot of local influence from Yan Zi and Jie Zheng plus Yung Jun Chan and Chia Jung Chaung.
The year will, of course, culminate with the season-ending Championships in Doha. As the defending champion, Henin will be eager to defend her title for the third year in a row. But both Venus and Serena will be there alongside her, and if the sisters are positioned just right they could make it to the final together. But look out for Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, because they know how to go further than they did in 2007.
One group of women to always look out for are the Russians. Maria Sharapova came back strong at the end of 2007 and will most likely continue to get back into the top of the game. Svetlana Kuznetsova may make a couple of final appearances but nothing substantial. The ones to look out for will be Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova; Dementieva pulled off a stunning win against Serena in the final of the Kremlin Cup, and it is possible that Anastasia Myskina could make a comeback after spending most of the 2007 season sidelined.
Once again the season will be highlighted by emerging young stars, so look out for players like Tamira Pazsek, Tatiana Golovin and Bethanie Mattek making the breakthrough.
What I am most looking forward to is the continued comeback of Lindsay Davenport, who returned to competition in the second half of the 2007 season after becoming a mother. She was able to claim two titles in her return, and if she can do that, then what will she do in a full calendar year? She will probably make the quarter-finals or better in some Grand Slams and will be a big force to be reckoned with at the Olympics.
Either way, the 2008 season will be one to remember. How could you ask for something more when you have Davenport returning, Venus and Serena continuing their resurgence, and the dominance of Henin? And to add to all that the Olympics are back this season. There shouldn’t be a dull moment during 2008.

your conclusion is williamses will win all majors??? I say zero slams for sisters this year. they wont even make finals..
by Kaltrina on January 02, 2008
A marvellous writing. The two tennisers that I like the most are Serena and Lindsay. Hope this year will be fantastic for them, and I just dream the final in a Grand Slam between Serena and Lindsay. And hope that will win Lindsay :)
by Justin on January 02, 2008
I see Serena having a chance at ALL except the French, Justine has her name all over that. Venus will defend her title and beat Serena in a thrilling 3 setter. the US will be b/w Justine and Serena. I expect Justine to make it to the semis of all the slams but only walk away with the french. Serena wins 2 (Austalian and US) and Venus dominates Wimbledon. the Serbs will go slam-less on the womens side but Novak might pull on out on the mens side, maybe.

The Williams sisters will dominate 2008. Moreover, the shape that Serena is in at the beginning of this year is stunning. As for Venus she will undoubtably be fitter than ever. Team Williams will not take being beaten by Justine Henin lightly because they and we all know that Serena and Venus Williams are numbers one and two in the world respectivly. Every slam this year will have a williams name on it.:)

You're saying Williams will win all and the olympics. Well, we'll find out very soon. @ John. OK John, I'll take you on your word in your comment and give you the benefit of the doubt. But if they don't , please stop saying that for a while then. A real long while;-)

well, this is somewhat of a fantasy article! i disagree with Venus winning the french, but i do believe she'll win 2 majors, i know she'll win Wimbledon but i think she'll win the Aussie Open, she wants it badly! Henin will win the french, of course. and the US Open will be a toughy, after the long stressed out year it'll be between Venus, Henin, Serena, and the two Serbs (mostly Ivanovic). the all play good at the US Open, so it's basically anybodys ball game at that tournament! nobody will dominant the tour but Justine will still be #1, Venus #2, Serena #3, and Sharapova #4. Sharapova won't do that much this year cause she's losing her fear factor, she has to get it back, she really needs to get her confidence back! wat a 2008........
by Jaglo on January 04, 2008
I think that the William sisters and Justine will split the slams again. I do not believe that Justine will win US Open but I predict her winning the French again. I think Serena or Venus will win US 2008. Sharapova's chance of winning a slam in 2008 is very slim. She will not get pass Justine nor the sisters. I think that Sharapova can compete against everyone else besides the big 3. In essence, I predict it to be a similar year to 2007 except for US Open.

This is such a biased article. Go sleep and dream your fantasy tennis world. This thing won't happen. Ugh. I can't believe they let writers like YOU post in Sportingo. This is just hogwash.
by Mikey on January 04, 2008
I'm a Justine fan, but I hope someone this year can push her a little and we can see some great matches. It will be boring if Justine just rolls over everyone in 2008.
by Jodie Arnaud on January 04, 2008
I think the article is quite fair really, my only concerns regarding the Williams sisters are if they will actually play a lot of tennis this year. Injuries aside they do tend to miss some events but still gain places in the majors. Personally I think you have to question commitment, there is no doubt of their talent, but I sometimes wish they would show more commitment to the game. I hope this year is full of shake ups and surprises, plus I really hope Lindsay Davenport and Amelie Mauresmo get in to their full stride as there is no doubting they are top players. If you look at the current top 10 ranking I sometimes find it hard to comprehend that players like Bartoli etc are being hailed as supreme because of a few wins. I do think marion Bartoli is a good player but I think she has way further to go before she can compare to the big guns on a week in week out basis. Anyway Happy Tennis everyone

What 2007 showed is that Henin has Serena's number. If Serena is in shape, she can make Justine work. But in Henin we're talking about a fitter, faster player with the greatest variety of shots in tennis. Serena and Venus -- combined -- will beat Henin maybe once this year. They will need to get used to losing to this woman or decide to hang up their rackets. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, mate!

The Williams Sisters will do better this year, more titles and more confidence but Justine will reign for another year. With that said, I predict she will be at the top until her retirement. Not only is Justine's game better, her attitude is so much more friendlier and easy going. I think she is really enjoying her tennis now and that is what the sport is about. The Serbs and Sharapova will contest 2008, but not by much.

worst prediction ever... williams winning slams while henin is around? i dont think so....
by c g on January 06, 2008
Don't quite think those will happen. Henin is way to competitive to let the Williams sisters dominate.
by lmfao on January 06, 2008
the author tries to make it nonbiased by saying justine, serena and venus will be the top dogs this year so to say yet he just says the williams sisters will get all the slams what a ridiculous article and to those that agree completely with him, get off that cloud you're on and see things for what they are
by Jason on January 06, 2008
Serena, Venus & Justine will most CERTAINLY dominate all the Slams this year. Duh. Serena is as fit as a fiddle and she lives in FL, so winning the terribly hot Aussie Open for the 4th time is a no-brainer. Justine is the best clay courter alive and she'll win the French unless either of the Williams Sisters beats her. And for that blessed Wimbledon grass, we ALL know that Venus is the best grass court player alive...man or woman. And as for the US Open, that's Serena or Venus. The surface is too fast for Justine to repeat and the Williams Sisters are frankly pi**ed about losing to the same woman last year. This will be an amazing and very competitive year. But I think the big wins are already a given.

Lindsay is very good, probably she will be in top 5...

Hi there, Although i am a true Williams (both Venus and Serena) supporter at heart, after last week i watched Davenport play in Auckland New Zealand and although a tier 4 event she was so dominant that i think she will be a surprise package this year, also no one has heard but also local new zealand girl Marina Eracovic is a new up and comer, beating Vera Zonvareva to reach the semis. Its Very early on in the season but i do agree the Williams Sisters look in HOT shape right now, Venus beating Sharapova over the weekend and Serena claiming Hopman cup, lets see if Justine will come away with Sydney, if thats the case i think we have a battle on our hands with the Williams, Henin. with Davenport a real threat to all women in the Top 10, she has nothing to loose and looks much more relaxed on court now after having her baby!
by Jaglo on January 07, 2008
I think that Justine and the William sisters will undoubtedly be the top 3 players at the end of year. I do not believe that in a Grand Slam final Justine can beat Serena. I think she can beat her in a quarterfinal but not a semi nor final. Everyone knows that Serena is fired up particularly in finals. Serena does not have to be in great shape to win the finals but getting there will require her full determination and drive. I don't think Justine would want to play Serena in a final, perhaps Venus maybe but not Serena.
by Joey on January 07, 2008
While I do agree that Henin will continue to dominate (probably French and another major), the Williams sisters will suffer a weaker season. I will admit that one of them has a great chance to win one major, I simply do not see them winning two. Rather, I think that we should see a great show from Sharapova (Aussie, Wimbie, US) and she will win one of them. Jankovic and Ivanovic are excellent players, but their weaknesses, as of right now, are too glaring for them to win.
by betu on January 08, 2008
I'd think that Vaidisova, Golovin and ?Pouchek will break through as well as Svajay.

The depart of Martina has made me to lost interest on the tour. From my point of view she will be always cansidered one of the greats, there was no reazon for her to cotninue. As a proof of her greatness will stay forever her triunfant return on the 2007 season. there is not reazon concern about what happen after that. Hail martina. Leonora
