Maria Sharapova completed a sensational comeback from injury and loss of confidence and form in 2007, to  blast her way to a third Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open.

Her victim this time was Serbian sensation Ana Ivanovic who on this occasion proved no match for the 20-year-old Russian who, at the age of 17, beat Serena Williams to take the Wimbledon title, and two years later beat Justine Henin to land the US Open. She didn't drop a set on her way to the title this time.

The first set was bursting with quality and tension as the power-driven pair kept up with each other. Strangely Sharapova was the first to get into major trouble as she was down 4-5, 0-30 when serving to level the match. But the feisty Russian fought back to hold and then broke the Serbian before serving out the set to love.

'There simply was no stopping the Russian as the second set went with serve to 3-3 and she then reeled off a series of winners to take the set 6-3 and the title 7-5, 6-3'

Maria upped her game in the second set and  was ruthless throughout. There simply was no stopping her as the and after it went with serve to 3-3, she then reeled off a series of winners to take the set 6-3 and the title 7-5, 6-3. Sharapova embraced her win by saying: “This is just incredible – if someone had told me in the middle of last year I’d be standing here in front of you all holding the big one, I’d probably have said forget it.”

Now let's have a look at where it went wrong for the more fancied seeds.

Henin, the world No.1 wasn’t on great form and was already enduring long sets in the early rounds before she met up with Sharapova in the semi-finals. But the Belgian girl, hot favourite to win in Melbourne, was simply outclassed by Maria 6-4, 6-0.

The Williams sisters really disappointed. Defending champion Serena came into the tournament in good form. She was upping her play as she went through the draw and her serve was accelerating. But she completely threw out that momentum and was a big mess against Jelena Jankovic.

Serena's sister, Venus,  won the Hong Kong warm-up event, beating Sharapova comfortably in straight sets incidentally. She came into the first Grand Slam of the year in incredible form but lost her flawless play immediately and went through matches relying on her divine winning skills. It seemed only a matter of time before she was found wanting, and Ivanovic did just that, sending the American packing 7-6(3), 6-4. Both Williams sisters seemed to be carrying minor injuries, but neither used that as an excuse for defeat.

Beaten quarter-finalists Daniela Hantuchova and Jankovic will be happy with a great run in Melbourne, although No.2 seed Kuznetsova will have been disappointed to lose out to the 18-year-old Pole Agnieszka Radwanska. Lindsay Davenport and Elena Dementieva were both thrashed by Sharapova and last year’s semi-finalist, Nicole Vaidisova, was yet again beaten by Serena Williams.
