Venus and Serena Williams had a bad Australian Open. The sisters, who are considered a threat in every tournament and especially in the majors, didn't even make it to the semi-final stages.

But should we really be that disappointed? Venus and Serena are great athletes and tennis players, having brought a new kind of power into the game. The tennis world was taken by surprise when they came into the professional game because they never went trough junior tournaments to reach the level of professionals.

And the reason they are not so successful today is that the women's game has hitched a ride on the power game the two sisters brought into tennis. What once used to be a unique style became the norm, and they lost the advantage of that power play.

'The women's game has hitched a ride on the power game Serena and Venus brought into tennis'

Young players like Ana Ivanovic are not afraid of the sisters any more. They can handle the power, and regard Venus and Serena as just another obstacle on their way to a title.

This new generation of tennis players hits the ball hard from the baseline and has the stamina and desire to win. Even someone like Justine Henin, with less power and a different style of play, found an answer to 'sister power', using great footwork, changing the pace during points and coming to the net once in a while.

The sisters can still dominate women's tennis but they need to take their game a step further as power alone does not work any more. They should think seriously about bringing in a new dimension that will once again surprise opponents and give them an edge.

The answer could well lie in serve and volley, variation of speed and finesse.
