Martina Hingis and the desire to give something back to tennis
With her intended participation in a Liverpool tournament, is the former world No. 1 looking to get back into the game after her ban?

Early this year, the tennis world was rocked with the news that Martina Hingis, who was once the darling of the crowd has been banned from tennis for two years for testing positive to cocaine use.
Though she angrily denied it and still protests her innocence of such allegation, even going to the extent of holding a press conference, this issue not only tarnished her Cinderella-like tennis career but also brought a scandal to the sport itself.
Is this where her story ends? No happy-ever-after ending? For a while that was how her story seemed to be heading, anti-climactic. After winning three Tier events and making her way back to being ranked player in the world, it all seemed to be true. Just for a moment, tennis had a feel-good story to talk about aside from the scandals of match fixing.
But the question is: Where does the story go from here? With the intended participation of the Swiss Miss in the Liverpool International Exhibition round this year, is there a future ahead for Hingis in the tennis world? What are her options?
It may be too early to answer that one. However, what is certain is that athletes will always have a desire to be around the sport that was once their life-blood. Whether it be match commentating, coaching and anything related, they will surely find a way to be closer to the air that they used to breath.
Probably this is how former champions behave in their desire to give something back to the sports that once placed them at the pedestal.

I think it's simply love for the game.

It would be wonderful if Martina played again. She's easily the most charismatic player of the last decade, maybe of all time. And her game is the most beautiful I've ever see. The current crop of ball bashers are a joke in comparison.

It's incredible to me that Martina (of all players) will be associated with drugs. It's pure bullshit and completely false and I'm glad a lot of her tennis colleagues have come to her defence. How can some one who plays tennis with her BRAINS be accused of taking cocaine. As she rightly put it, she would personally be terrified of taking the substance. I'm sad that she has quit but I believe completely in her innocence. A player like her doesn't need drugs to perform. She is simply good with her head. As Billy Jean King put it, nobody can ever play like Martina. She was exceptional and tennis has lost a lot of fans because of this horrendous and absolutely false accusation. We love u Martina and I believe Martina will come back and win two more grand slams just to put all 'doubters' to shame
