Most tennis fanatics assumed Amelie Mauresmo would never win on the big stage. In 2006 she finally put an end to those assumptions, winning the Australian Open AND Wimbledon. She managed to finish off the season fairly strong, but since winning in Antwerp in 2007 she has failed to claim a title. It’s hard to tell which direction would benefit the French woman more. Is it possible that she should just focus on doubles until she can regain her confidence?
Even though she hasn’t won many titles on the doubles circuit, it could possibly benefit her in the long run to focus exclusively on doubles. Some of the world’s greatest singles players, were tremendously successful doubles players.
Players like the Williams sisters and Martina Hingis used doubles matches to help fine-tune their game and gain confidence. If she regains the confidence that aided her in her Grand Slam victories, she can once again be a dominant force in singles
In 2005, she played a limited doubles schedule, but when she teamed up with Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia at Wimbledon, the two stormed their way to the final before falling to Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
