Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin are the best in the game and they seem to just be getting better. And with Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, in contention for Grand Slam success, Martina Hingis needs to say goodbye to tennis.
On top of all that, Maria Sharapova looks set to dominate the game. She is still only 20 years of age but shows maturity far beyond her years.
Hingis is thought by some to be one of the best tennis players ever, and but for a career break a few years ago and a two-year ban just imposed on her for cocaine taking, many thought she could emulate the success of Steffi Graf on the tour.
Winner of five Grand Slam singles sucesses and numerous doubles successes, Hingis was a revelation in her younger years, dominating the game and being ranked No. 1 for almost three years in a row.

Martina is an infinately better player than Sharapova, so get a grip! Justine is far better than Maria, and Martina is better than Justin. So there you have it. When either of those 2 are number 1 for at least 209 weeks, let me know.

uhmm Maria has nothing to do with Martina not playing. Where have you been? Also to report that Martina can't handle Maria's power when Martina defeated Maria 6/3 6/1 In their first meeting and when Martina was only a few months into her comeback shows just how much time you put into your work and just how much you know about tennis.

Maria is just playing well as of the moment. But to compare her with Hingis' success is a tall order. Maria may have power but power means more injury and shorter tennis career span. In my opinion one more shoulder ijnury for Maria and there goes her hopes. I guess this article was written in a rush... and i know the reason (wink)
A very badly researched article. No one is "dominating". The William sisters at their best ARE the best on the tour. Simple as that

Martina was a great player in late 90's.Her playing style is entirely different in all aspects. She was not beaten before the quater finals when she was in peak.Maria does not.

Nobody can't forget sweet Martina she was the best tennis player I ever saw, she played the real tennis where Sharapova and Williams just tries to outpower each other if that doesn't work they starts to grunt or act injury. Martina is the true player and nobody can replace her.

I will admit that I haven't followed the tour to the same degree that I once did, but even I realize that Henin was won seven Grand Slams, and Sharapova just won her third. Without doubt Sharapova is one of the better player from 2004 to the present, but even if you only go from Wimbledon 2004 on, Henin still has more Slams and more titles. Sharapova may be the player of the moment, but she can't pass Henin before Wimbledon so saying that she will dominant is a bit getting ahead of oneself. Her 2008 is hardly unprecedented in dominance. When Sharapova wins this week and Key Biscayne and a few titles on clay then we can start talking about her winning the French and hence completing the career Grand Slam and finishing the year no.1, but until then we are reading a little too much into her recent success . If we are talking about Sharapova as being a star for advertising dollars, then yes, I think few could question that, but advertising dollars and being greatest in one's sport have a weak relationship. I had trouble finding a listing of her current endorsement earnings, but anyone who has watched enough television has seen her promoting countless products so she is no doubt earning well into eight figures in US dollars in ad deals. What I don't understand is how Sharapova has anything to do with Hingis not playing tennis much during this decade. Sharapova only played Hingis three times and Hingis won once, so it wasn't like Sharapova was knocking Hingis out left and right. Did Sharapova cause Hingis to quit tennis for a few years? nope. Did Sharapova cause Hingis to test positive for coke? Nope. Was Hingis inability to consistently beat Sharapova a factor? Maybe, but to say Sharapova is the main reason Hingis should stay retired shows that the author didn't do much research.

Sometimes, these writers underestimate the intelligence of the people who read their articles. As some one commented earlier, what do Martina and Maria have in common? NOTHING. Please it's really offensive to place sharapova in the same breath as MARTINA HINGIS. No matter what people say now, there is no player (past or present) who plays with such incredible intelligence and craftiness as MARTINA HINGIS. Her kind of tennis game is such a delight to watch and tennis has really lost a great talent. She brings such variety to the game. She is my favourite player of all time and I make no apologies for it. Her only fault was not to have added power to her game. Had she been able to add that to her itenary, she may still be no. 1 today. All said and done, I think she brought so much to the game of tennis, to the extent people who previously didn't like tennis were won over by her incredible chess-like play. I challenge the writer to do a detailed research on MARTINA HINGIS and he will easily see that her name will pop up in 'tennis all-time greats'. Maria Shara....what? please...u writers shouldn't be wasting our eyes and thought processes with such nonsensical articles...I love u martina...
