Justine Henin: Up there with the greatest (gettyimages.com)

The tough Belgian was the stand-out player in 2007 and finished the last two seasons ranked No.1 in the world. Is she the finest woman player ever?

‘In 2007 Henin had by far her most successful season. She captured 10 titles including two Grand Slams, equalling Kim Clijsters for the most titles won in a season’

When spectators ponder the thought of who is the best tennis player in the world they wouldn’t even glance at the small European country of Belgium. Even though it may fly under the radar of some fanatics, it’s home to one of the world’s greatest players, Justine Henin.

Even though she has had a less than impressive year thus far, there is no denying that Henin is one of the greatest women of all time. Her success record and statistics can prove the notion on their own, but her grace on the courts speaks greater volumes.

Already at the age of 25, she has captured a massive 42 titles. Amongst those titles, she holds seven Grand Slam trophies. Even though she won the US Open twice and the Australian Open once, her success record at the French Open clearly sets her apart.

In the past five years the resilient Belgian has won the Roland Garros title four times. Most impressive is the fact that she has won the prestigious title for the past three years.

Since ranking in the top 10 for the first time in 2001, Henin hasn’t finished a season ranked any lower. In 2003 she finally reached the No.1 ranking, and during her fluctuation at the top spot, she has spent a total of 108 weeks ranked as the world’s top woman.

Before winning last year’s US Open for the second time, she accomplished something not many women have been successful at. She defeated both Venus and Serena Williams in successive rounds. That feat alone sets her apart from the majority of players; it’s fairly rare for someone to beat both sisters.

In 2007 Henin had by far her most successful season. She captured 10 titles including two Grand Slams, equalling Kim Clijsters for the most titles won in a season.

She is one of the most dominant forces on the tour. The backhand and power she produces is something truly outstanding. At 5ft 5in, not many would expect such brilliant capabilities.

On top of everything she has had to deal with extremely difficult situations. But did she let the death of her mother, estrangement from her family, and divorce from her husband get in her way?  If anything when she persevered she came out stronger.

She is a truly magnificent player. Her career seems to be far from over, and as she continues to grace the court, she can only continue to add to her success.  There is no telling how far she can go, but she has set the expectations high.

Is Henin the greatest ever? Give your verdict below.

to start, very well written article =) . justine is definately one of the greatest players of all time, last year definately showed that with winning three sucessive FO and her second USO beating serena and venus (who are definately no pushovers) along the way (no one has beaten both sisters in a grand slam and won the title). i do feel its funny however that even though justine hasn't had an amazing start to the year, people are starting to say other players will take her #1 rank soon. i don't think 2 titles in a couple months is bad, in fact most players would love to have just 1 title this year

Justine is the best ever. This article is awesome and 100% correct. justine rocks the world's socks off

I think she'll stay at No. 1 for another two consecutive years.. then things will go downhill and she'll call it quits at 30. I'm guessing she'll achieve another 4-5 grand slam titles.

Justine henin is the best ever. to be so small but so great at the same time is a testament to how truly talented she is and how hard she has had to work to achieve the success she has achieved. A little burnt out at the beginning of this year after a wildly successful 2007 and only a ten-day lay off in between, Justine will bounce back in Miami and once again show the tennis world who's boss. ALLEZ JUJU!!!

Given her size and physical form and in the world of Muscle Tennis ... to achieve such great feats make her one of the top 3 greats of all time ... She is a terrific champion

People who think Justine will be overtaken soon do not understand the ranking system. Everybody who thinks they can overtake #1 need to firstly defend everything they did last year, or lose ground (Anna has to win everything she won again) and there is over 2,000+ points between Justine and #2, Justine will have to lose a lot during the clay court season (not very likely). In short, Justine will have to lose almost everything she won last year and her overtaker will have to win everything they won last year and win some slams. It is possible, but not likely. It is more likely that Fed gets overtaken than Justine.
Henin is who? (25/03/2008 15:43)
I don´t like her at all. She´s such a cheater and a bandle of nerves, I don´t believe in her at all.

Though I do think Henin is a great player, I have never been a fan of her's due to her questionable sportsmanship. Ever since her little act at the French Open in 2003 against Serena Williams where she held her hand up and denied it, i have not enjoyed her game. It is wrong to say she is the best ever in my mind, as she has not reached the accomplishments of a Monica Seles, Martina Navratilova, or Steffi Graf. I don't really care for Henin when she's on the court because she constantly cheers for her opponent's mistakes and her 'Allez!' gets really annoying. Sorry, just don't care for her.

Well i dont really care for her either, but she is a great clay court player, i cant deny that. But after her hand gesture at the Frenc Open i havent like her. She is probably one of my least fav. players out there, but its hard to not notice her accomplishments. But agree with the last two comments.

good article, better written than your "federer should fear williams sisters" article.

Justine has been really off her game this year. After a wonderuful 2007, she has yet to find the form that was so dominating last year. She does not seem to be playing with confidence and she is not hitting those great precision shots and attacking. Both Serena and Pova have blown her off the court and bageled her on the second sets of their matches. She used to blow them off the court. What is up? Her serve has become a joke. Does Carlos know how to coach such a vital thing as a serve. You can't have a first serve % of 51% and win slams.
