When spectators ponder the thought of who is the best tennis player in the world they wouldn’t even glance at the small European country of Belgium. Even though it may fly under the radar of some fanatics, it’s home to one of the world’s greatest players, Justine Henin.

Even though she has had a less than impressive year thus far, there is no denying that Henin is one of the greatest women of all time. Her success record and statistics can prove the notion on their own, but her grace on the courts speaks greater volumes.

Already at the age of 25, she has captured a massive 42 titles. Amongst those titles, she holds seven Grand Slam trophies. Even though she won the US Open twice and the Australian Open once, her success record at the French Open clearly sets her apart.

‘In 2007 Henin had by far her most successful season. She captured 10 titles including two Grand Slams, equalling Kim Clijsters for the most titles won in a season’

In the past five years the resilient Belgian has won the Roland Garros title four times. Most impressive is the fact that she has won the prestigious title for the past three years.

Since ranking in the top 10 for the first time in 2001, Henin hasn’t finished a season ranked any lower. In 2003 she finally reached the No.1 ranking, and during her fluctuation at the top spot, she has spent a total of 108 weeks ranked as the world’s top woman.

Before winning last year’s US Open for the second time, she accomplished something not many women have been successful at. She defeated both Venus and Serena Williams in successive rounds. That feat alone sets her apart from the majority of players; it’s fairly rare for someone to beat both sisters.

In 2007 Henin had by far her most successful season. She captured 10 titles including two Grand Slams, equalling Kim Clijsters for the most titles won in a season.

She is one of the most dominant forces on the tour. The backhand and power she produces is something truly outstanding. At 5ft 5in, not many would expect such brilliant capabilities.

On top of everything she has had to deal with extremely difficult situations. But did she let the death of her mother, estrangement from her family, and divorce from her husband get in her way?  If anything when she persevered she came out stronger.

She is a truly magnificent player. Her career seems to be far from over, and as she continues to grace the court, she can only continue to add to her success.  There is no telling how far she can go, but she has set the expectations high.
