Serbia's Jelena Jankovic is no stranger to Grand Slam victories.
She won the Junior Australian Championships in 2001 and also won the 2007 Wimbledon mixed doubles title with Brit Jamie Murray. With an athletic game which has helped her rise to No. 3 currently on the WTA rankings, Jankovic and her many fans are looking for her to take the next big step in her career: win a Grand Slam title. Jelena's top five breakthrough in Women's tennis is truly remarkable if you consider the fact that she almost quit the game in 2006 after a string of dismal results. However, a quarter-final result at the Italian Open gave her confidence to keep on grinding away on the tour, and that's exactly what she did.
In an amazing mid-career comeback, Jankovic scored wins over both Venus and Serena Williams and reached the US Open semis with wins over Nicole Vaidisova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Elena Dementieva.
Along with a few late season semi-final and quarter-final finishes, she ended the year in the top 15. Using the momentum she gained from the end of 2006, she turned 2007 into her Top 10 breakthrough year, winning four titles and reaching the semis of Roland Garros. And 2008 has been the start of another successful campaign after semi-final finishes at the Australian Open, Dubai, and Indian Wells. Jankovic is one of the most popular players among fans today, and there are certainly reasons for that. Her personality on and off the court is uniquely pleasant and it's a joy to watch her play, read her WTA blogs and listen to her press conferences.

I think Jankovic still need to prove that she is grand slam winning material, for now yhis 2008 will show the likes Venus, Serena, Sharapova and Henin winning a slam this year. The only chance could be at Roland Garros but she will need to defeat Henin

Jelena Jankovic is one of the greatest players, even though im a true Williams fan, i still always always look forward to watching the Serb perform. i think she has a great chance of wiinning a grand slam, I think she is underestimated a lot too, and i agree that she is better than Ivanovic. It's very possible she could make it to number one in the world, she made it to number two in the world, and with Justine faltering thus far its going to leave the door wide open for her. Great article though!

Great article! I agree that her game is underestimated and that she is better player than Ivanovic and I hope she'll prove it this year!

I think that Jelena is a great player, and that she has greater potential to be a No. 1 player than Ana. Don't know why she always looses to her. Also, Jelenas game suffered a slow down lately, but hopefully she can continue to improve even more, and that she can start by taking the Miami masters tournament.

I've always said Serbia is the new Belgium. Remember at the beginning of Henin and Kim's career? Kim had more success (and buzz) but towards the middle through to the end, Henin overtook Kim. It might very well be the same for these two Serbs.

i really like Jelena as a player, she has a great attitude specially on coutr, imagine she can still manage to smile even if she is loosing, she also has a great chance of winning her 1st grandslam title as far as her playing tactics are concern.GUD LUCK AND BEST WISHES TO YOU JELENA IM YOUR NUMBER 2 FAN

Jankovic is a good player but not yet a great player. If she wins a grand slam this year it would be only because the top guns e.g. Serena, Venus, Justine and Sharapova are not in the tournament. I do not think she has what it takes to beat them in a championship match. She may beat one of them to get to it but if all of the top 4 are in it, one of them will stop her from winning the big match. She still hasn't proven that she can beat her fellow countrywoman, Ivanovic. Yes, it appears that she is better but until she actually does it, then it is still wishful thinking. Perhaps she needs to take some of those smiles and replace them with grunts. She is entertaining on the court but not a true champion yet.
