After more than a few anxious moments, the Queen of Mean beat Jelena Jankovic to take the Florida crown yet again

Here in the United States, everyone and their mother is obsessed with the final four this weekend. It’s the final event of the annual rite known as March Madness – the college basketball championships.
To kick off the weekend, we had the women’s championships of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Indian Wells and Miami have trouble getting US television coverage because they have to fight for air time with March Madness. European coverage uses the US feed so it’s a bad thing all round. It’s unfortunate because all those people are missing out on seeing Serena Williams let go with a primal scream that is unmatched in the world of sports. Forget about button-up college basketball coaches who never say anything that isn’t politically correct and young basketball players who seldom come up with anything beyond a variation on “We’re just worried about the next game.” How boring is that? 'This is the first time since 2004 that Serena has defended a title - and that was Miami, too'Give me the Queen of Mean - and I mean that in the best possible way. When Serena is prowling the court, she is unbeatable. She let out more than one of those shattering primal screams while pummelling Justine Henin in the quarter-final 6-2, 6-0. Why is it, then, that her opponent in the Miami final, Jelena Jankovic, has a winning record of 3-2 over Serena coming into the match? The answer: Because she outlasts Serena and she almost did it again this time. You always hear about Jelena beating back multiple match points and playing heroic, come-from-behind matches. She did it at the Australian Open on more than one occasion and she did it here against Sofie Arvidsson. She came back from 1-5 in the third set to get to the tiebreaker, then survived five match points in the tiebreaker to beat Arvidsson in the second round. It is heroic but she wouldn’t need to be so heroic if she improved her serve. There's no need to fight back from 1-5 if you hold your serve now and then. The scene was set for yet another heroic win as Serena broke Jelena quickly and often. She broke her twice in the first set to win it 6-1, then broke her again in her first two service games in the second set.
Of course it takes strength and she is almost 5ft10in (177cm) while only weighing 130lb (59kg), but one of the keys to a strong serve is wrist snap. At that height, she should be able to get some snap on the ball instead of just rolling the ball in as she currently does. And she’s got plenty of flexibility which is also a key to serving well.
All match long you see her drop into the splits and it’s not those painful splits you used to see in Kim Clijsters’ games, Jelena does it effortlessly. And if Jelena doesn’t have a strong serve, then she should put some twist and turn on it like Rafael Nadal does. Come to think of it, she may be having the same problem Rafa has: he’s a switch hitter. Rafa is naturally right-handed and plays left-handed and it makes his serve a bit awkward. Jelena is naturally left-handed but she plays right-handed. I don’t really understand why players do the switch hitting thing, do you? I suppose it’s because some young kids feel more comfortable hitting a tennis ball with their offhand but kids also don’t do a lot of serving. Has anyone ever served with one hand and hit a one-handed forehand with the other? I suppose not, because the player would have to slip the serving hand up the racket at the end of the serve to let the offhand take over on the forehand side. All the more reason I'd discourage a young player from switch hitting.
By my count, this is the first time since 2004 that Serena has defended a title - and that was Miami, too. She did win two Tier One titles last year, though, so she’s making her way back into a consistently respectable form and that is a nice ending, too.

Fine tournament from Serena, but the rest of the year will be interesting, since she failed to win anything else last year. She definitely stands a good chance to climb further up the top 10, especially given how Justine is struggling this year. But I think her dream of no.1 will not materialise. Too many players are capable of beating her now, on bot good and bad days. And her ranking slipping makes perfect sense.

Hi Kumar, I agree that Serena will not likely get to number one but I do think she'll win more tournaments this year. She looks like her focus has shifted back to tennis. By they way, what do you think is wrong with Justine? Has she tired herself out again? Are other players just better? Clearly Ivanovic and Sharapova are greatly improved this year but she also isn't quite herself.

Of course Serena has a chance at number one again. Ya know, this woman kicks butt time and time again and STILL people don't want to give her what's due. SHE BEAT the number one, three AND FOUR players in the world in this tournament...and pretty convincingly I might add. She also has a winning record or is at least tied with EVERY single player on the tour. Um...sounds like she's definitely one of the top 3 players on tour at any given time. As she showed at this tournament. Serena only blocks herself. And if she wasn't foolish enough to slow down her tennis for 3 years, God only KNOWS how many more slams and titles she'd have. But now her focus has 100% returned and so far she's 14-1 this year...a GREAT record I might add and the best record on tour right now. Bottom line... Going into the French, SERENA and JUSTINE are the women to beat. Because they're the last two whose won it over the last five years. Justine is the obvious favorite with Serena right behind her, because Serena can wax Justine on any given day, as she showed in Miami. So...of course Serena can be number one again. She just has to work hard, play more tournaments and stay consistent in her matches. If she does that, she's unbeatable. You know it, I know it...small furry animals know it.

Hi Jason, I love that: "small furry animals know that" and that's after watching the movie "Into the Wild" last night. Serena clearly has the game to be number one, that's not at issue. Furry animals would also agree. The problem is consistency and longevity. She played 45 matches last year and that's pretty good but she faded after a good start to the year. If Justine Henin is having a bad year, that's good news for Serena because Justine beat her so many times in important matches last year but Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic are younger and more solid physically. Being number one requires a lot of good results throughout the year and it's not clear to me that Serena can do that. If she can, she probably can't do it as well as Sharapova and Ivanovic.

Your reference of Serena as the queen of mean show how just degenerate, Jealuos and unrealistic you are in your pretentious world of tennis commentary. Serena Destroys the So-called higher rank players everytime she means business. Jankovic will never win a grand slam. She plays a million tournaments and that's why she is ranked that high. If Serena'a just plays half the tournaments that the other players play, she will stay number one forever. Name me one person who plays so little and beats the so called highest ranked in so dramatic fashion. In the history of the tennis game there will never be any two sisters who won multiple grand slams, became both 1 & 2 and coached by a father who never played the game and predicted all this to happen. You white skunks can't take it and so deal with it.

You kidding right? More like Kim's splits look so natural, while Jankowhore's look forced. Kim's splits are part of her game, while Jankowhore does it to gain attention to herself. Look how she always looks for the crowd's reactions after her splits. I simply do not understand the fascination with Jankowhore. She is middle-aged in tennis, and still hasnt achieved anything big, yet people see her as an elite. Gag

I think JASON WILLIAMS and FABIO VADES have echoed my thoughts exactly. It's amazing how 'people who should know better' have consistently tried unsuccessfully to denegrate serena and her sister to the background. Sometimes u wonder whether so-called low-life tennis writers are actually paid for such shitty acticles. As I write now, Serena has just beaten Maria Sharapova and is on course to win a third title this year. So what the heck are these 'haters' problem? Any way, I think Rolland Garros will more things in perspective for these short-sighted myopic racist writers. A player who beats Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 in the world is definitely No. 1 material no matter what the rankings say. Serena, I love u and so do many many others. Don't let ur detractors take away ur focus because I know 2008 will establish ur supremacy in the Tennis World. Good luck.
