Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – from champs to chumps
The world's top two men's tennis players have had a miserable 2008 so far, but a few shock defeats don't necessarily mean they are finished.

Since the turn of the year there hasn’t been an extreme amount of commotion from the tour’s leading competitors. On the WTA tour Justine Henin has fallen considerably short from where she concluded the 2007 season, and on the men’s tour Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal haven’t been much more impressive. It brings to light the question: Are they losing their star power and slowly becoming old news? Both of the top-ranked men have fall significantly short compared to their previous seasons. After three months neither man has captured a title and they continue to succumb to the most unlikely opponents. But one aspect that remains the same is their Popularity among Tennis fans across the globe.Even though the young Spaniard Nadal has failed to claim a title, he is still extremely consistent. On only one occasion has he failed to progress to at least the quarter-finals of an event, falling in Rotterdam to Andreas Seppi of Italy.‘Nadal has already appeared in two tour finals, in Chennai and Miami, but he hasn’t put up much of a fight and lost both matches in straight sets...’Nadal has already appeared in two tour finals, in Chennai and Miami, but he hasn’t put up much of a fight and lost both matches in straight sets, one to Nikolay Davydenko and another to Mikhail Youzhny. But even more shocking is the fact that he lost 6-0, 6-1 to Youzhny. Nadal doesn’t often drop a set to love, and for the young clay-court king to only manage one game in a match is something astonishing. On the other hand, Federer hasn’t even reached a tour final in 2008. Starting the season with a virus could be part of the reason for his lapse in form.Probably one of the biggest surprises for Federer was his loss in Indian Wells. Although he advanced to the semi-finals, not many would have considered it possible for him to fall victim to Mardy Fish, who ranked barely inside the world top 100 at the time. Federer didn’t put up much of a fight against Fish in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat.

Nadal had a very good year up to now except that he has lost 2 finals.Nadal is improving on hard courts.Only thing is that he has to change his game even more to win consistently on hard courts.Federer he has nothing else to prove. He will bounce back

The fact remains that both federer and Nadal have been at 1 and 2 for almost last 3 years. They have always remained well ahead of the number 3. Recently Novak has been able to close the gap at the top. Nadal has been mostly found satisfied with his posn because of some outstanding results achieved by Federer in the last four years. Federer seems to slump from his normal performance. You can clearly see the results of 2007. They are not similar to 2004, 05 or 06. 2008 has been disastrous for Federer so far. Infact hte great man seems to lose interest. His hunger for more victories seems to be diminishing. He looks casual and less interested. If Federer starts to take more interest, he still has the talent to give clean sweep to rude and discourteous players like Novak. Federer is no doubt as gentle and cool as he was ever. One thing is very clear that Federer would remain in the hearts of everyone till he is on the court as number 1 or number 100, it doesnt matter.

i think both men need to put up a better fight and win more titles. they are really good players but if they keep playing the way they have been then they are gonn keep on losing. Nadal is my favorite tennis player and to see him give up like that would be a great disappointment to me and his other fans.

Nadal is doing fine this year. I am wondering why the world number 2 which is 2nd in this years atp race is under question at all??Now then there is Federer he had mono duh...people shouldn't expect peak preformance for like 6 months!

how can you say from champs to chumps? to be honest both roger and rafa have ad a good year by mos but because we're so used to them winning every tournament they enter, so chill with the headline and negative comments. its not as if they're losing, people are stepping and beating them! look at roger, his losses this year are to both andy's, novak, and fish (which is the only fluke loss) but each player played out of their mind. and for rafa, he's always been beatable during this time of the year, this is no surprise, hardcourts are not his favorite surface. so, this athor needs to take a look back and check his facts and stats before he writes something so stu-pid!

We have been spoilt rotten for four plus years with sublime and power tennis from two deserving no's1 and 2. They have promoted tennis and been responsible for "full house" tennis stadiums around the world. How long did we expect them to carry on and on winning????? So now some of the exciting new young guns are catching up! this makes for MORE enticing tennis, and it does not mean that Roger and Rafa won't ever win again. Please please all these so-called journalists out there, why not report objectively instead of resorting to ridiculing Roger and Rafa?? They have been exemplary ambassadors of tennis DO THEY DESERVE THIS??????? from FEDFAN.

No disrespect intended, Abe, but sit back and read the several articles you have written lately. You seem to write two opposite opinions on many points you are discussing. And I agree with the other comments posted here: your headline and article contradict the facts. It is almost certain that we should indeed wait 6 months after Roger's mono before expecting to see his best form. Having said that I do agree with you that even before he fell ill he was looking less hungry a number of times throughout 2007. And as for Rafa, while it is true he won one title in 2007 prior to the claycourt season, his overall stats are much better this year for the first 3.5 months of the year. And he just undescored his great form on hardcourt this year with a straight set victory against a tough opponent on a fast hardcourt last Friday at the Davis cup, even while being jet-lagged.
