In recent years there has been a huge gap in the tennis rankings. There was always one prominent figure going into every tournament who you were sure would win - but is it really still like that? No, there are now three or four players challenging on all fronts for every title, making the whole experience of the sport more exhilarating for all.Roger Federer, as all tennis pundits know, is off that pace. He isn’t as smooth and classy as he once was. As for Rafael Nadal, he doesn’t have the composure and all-round game to become more consistent in the hard-court season.'The young Serb has ground strokes to die for, and a serve which no player likes to face. In my eyes, the only obstacle for this guy to overcome is himself'Finally, there's Novak Djokovic - a guy who is as cool as you get and takes everything in his stride, something which most players don’t achieve until their later years. Could this be the perfect chance for the young Serbian genius? I think so, and hope so….Watching this guy is like experiencing the wind blowing; so smooth and agile, yet can be powerful and erratic. So can he finally make the huge breakthrough that many of us have hoped for?Tese are my in-depth assessments of the three and my predictions for the next year:

THEY DON'T GET IT. IT WILL BE RAFA WHO WILL BECOME # 1 IN 2008. DO YOU AGREE?!

I honestly find the djoker's play systematic and mahcine like(quite boring-not the type of player i would stay awake for in the middle of the night just to watch him play)...He lacks the beauty and grace that other top players have...He knows what he has to do and he does it well no doubt about that! But he will NEVER DOMINATE TENNIS the way FEDERER has....He wins a tournament to lose the next one...HE IS NOT CONSISTENT he might become number 1 in the world but he will never be a great number one unlike Sampras or Federer.... because these guys knew/know how to win every single game every single week every single tournament...For crying out loud federer lost just 5 games in 2006 and 4 in 2005! I dont see the djoker doing this in fact i dont see anyone esle in tennis doing it...Sampras didnt even do it...So let's not talk about the joke prevailing at the end because i dont know in what sense he would....As for Nadal...The guy is one hell of a fighter and he deserves to be respected if anything he's the greatest number 2 we've ever had! So before we start comparing Novak to Federer let's not forget there's a massive and huge obstacle that he has to overcome otherwise known as RAFAEL NADAL!

Novak would have never won Australian Open 2008 if Roger Federer was not diagnosed with mononucleosis. Even with the ilness he reached the semis.

I think that Djokovic will be the next no.1 i dont think nadal can win on any other surface other then clay. which in my opinion makes him an average player nothing spectacular. federer i think has hit a mental block and will be struggling this yr to win his usual grand slams. say what you want about djokovic but he has got federers number. nadal is not even in the running for no 1 anymore. its between djokster and federer. nadal is out. welcome djokovic, the only one with a personality.

How can you say something like that about Roger? He played the best tennis 4 years. Just because he didn't win the title yet, that doesn't mean he's not good. He had MONO and he reached semo AO. When he played with Roddick he shown us he's coming back, he played great. So just sit and look who is and will be the best tennis player ever. Roger is back!
by connor harper on April 12, 2008
Roger is actually not back, he lost to Andy roddick who really isn't a force anymore in tennis.... I think your mind is closed to the possibilities that roger is finished at the top, he has come and got what he wanted. There is nothing there that is making hom give 110% anymore, but for novak there is 150% effort going into every tournament at the moment. Also man, this is just a personal vewi, don't like it when people over-react for no reason. "He played the best tennis 4 years" God he did alright, he won everything. There is nothing left for him now, this could be the beginning of the end for the legend "federer".. He had mono yes, but he has clearly stated that it is no longer in any effect to his tennis, and it's just that he can't regain the form.. This had to happen sometime, although it seems to fast for the man to slide down the rankings, it's just started happening! Novak has everything going for him and I still think he has the chance to overcome everything and to be a champ just like federer for a long time.
by Mike on April 12, 2008
Considering Roger is way way ahead of Djokovic in the standing it will be hard. Roger was sick and will be back. Lol I remember kids with mono in highschool that would sit on the couch for 6 months. Anyways, Djokovic is good but I dont think there will be a dramatic shake right away.

well, well. the guy's never played even a challenger and he talks of roger federer and authoritatively so. if u think andy roddick's a spent force i suggest u stand on yr baseline with your butt to the net. let andy serve and u'll know what spent force feels like.
by yuki on April 14, 2008
Sonia, Federer is a boring robot if anyone, and the excuses about the mono is a joke. It became boring listening to this kind of excuse everytime a player loses. OK, one cannot be in top form phisicly all the time, but decsovering a mononucleosys long past the tournament is a joke. Novak deserves the credit of having a good Australian open and that is that guys, just be fair and admit it, as should a sore looser Federer and many of his suporters here and else on the net. Novak is a lot of fun to watch, as a tennis player and a personality, something a game was missing for a long time. He is the one to congratulate the opponent, after winning or losing, in a way that NO OTHER tennis player will ever do, particulary not 'the great Roger'. Very good article Connor, and just one important thing, for me at least-- Novak doesn`t have to dethrone Federer to have a lot of supporters, just like Gasquet or Murray or any other good and exciting player that is to watch rather than 'must win everything ROBOT Roger'

Djokovic is a natural tennis talent. Not just tennis, but every sport can benefit from characters such as Djokovic. His spontaneous approach and extravert nature are the qualities that the sport heroes are made of. His willingness to constantly improve his game by adding diversity of shots and ability to change strategy during the match (i.e. against Tsonga) give him rights to claim #1 spot in the near future.

Thanks "Yuki" for your positive reply, something that a lot have found hard to acheive.
